Due to a severe back injury and a stubbed toe, Mayank Yadav was benched for six months and missed the start of the 2024-2025 season of a prestigious Indian cricket tournament. But now, he’s back on the pitch again since late April.

From fast bowls that exceeded 150 kilometers per hour, his recent ones only reached around 140 kilometers per hour. Because of this, fans say he’s not ready yet and may need more time to recover his previous glory. How true is that?

Enough time for recovery

The pace star had six months of recovery for his injuries—an adequate time frame for a full recovery. He suffered from a lumbar stress injury, and on average, it takes 20-30 weeks (5 to 7 months) for a full recovery. Since Mayank Yadav got injured in October last year and was back on the pitch in April 2025, he had six months of recovery in total.

Lack of confidence or lack of pace?

Former Indian cricket star Ambati Rayudu said in an interview, 'I think it is a lack of confidence more than a lack of pace, because once you are coming back from an injury, it is hard to bend your back and get back to your best. We have seen Archer, it took him six months to be back at his best,?when asked about Yadav’s performance versus Punjab’s local team.

This might be the case since, as mentioned earlier, Yadav had enough time to recover. His confidence in his bowls might not be back yet, but he’ll regain his composure and throw lightning-fast bowls again in time.

Did his team rush him back?

Since Yadav is a vital player for his team, people were speculating that they rushed his recovery so he could play as soon as possible. However, Lucknow’s team mentor, Zaheer Khan, reassured fans that the cricket star’s team were cautious not to rush his recovery.

‘Even though he had joined the team, we were taking our time just to create that comfort around him. I know that fast bowling is never easy, especially in this format when the batters are coming so hard at you. So, that was the thought process,?he said in an interview.

Despite this, Ambati Rayudu disagreed and stated, ' It will be tough if we say he (Mayank) is not performing, but LSG might have just shown some desperation to just get him into the mix, maybe he is not ready yet.?nbsp;

Is he ready?

Only Mayank Yadav can answer this question, but based on the facts, he is ready for the pitch—he just needs time to get used to it again. His recent performances were not optimal, but settling in again is part of recovery as well.

Former leg-spinner Anil Kumble holds the record for the most Test wickets for India.

The Karnataka-born cricketer picked 619 wickets in 132 Test matches that included 35 five-wicket hauls and eight 10-wicket hauls. Kumble is the fourth-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket history.

In 1999, he etched his name into history books as he became just the second bowler to claim 10 wickets in an innings in a Test after England’s Jim Laker.

Since making his Test debut against England in 1990, Kumble played a vital role in helping India win Test matches against various opponents both at home and abroad. He formed a lethal partnership with India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, scalping a combined 501 wickets in 54 matches, the most by any spin bowling pair.

Kumble played his last Test match against Australia at Feroz Shah Kotla in 2008.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin features second on the list for most wickets for India in Tests. Ashwin overtook former captain Kapil Dev to climb second in the list for most wickets for India in Tests. The legendary bowler became the second Indian bowler to bag 500 wickets in Test cricket. He achieved the incredible feat during the third Test of England's tour of India 2024 at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium.

Former India captain Kapil Dev is third-highest Test wicket-taker for India. The right-arm fast bowler picked 434 wickets in 131 matches at an average of 29.64.

India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh and seamer Ishant Sharma complete the top five list of most wickets for India in Tests.

While Harbhajan Singh has claimed 417 wickets in 103 matches. seamer Ishant Sharma has scalped 311 wickets in 105 matches.

During ICC World Cup 2023, right-arm fast bowler Mohammed Shami scripted history to become the record holder for the most wickets for India in ODI World Cup.

Since making his ODI World Cup debut in 2015, Mohammed Shami has picked 55 wickets in just 18 matches.

The previous record for the most wickets for India in ODI World Cup history was held by former left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan. He took 44 wickets in 23 matches.

Shami surpassed Zaheer Khan during Indian cricket team’s ICC World Cup 2023 clash against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

With 55 wickets to his name, Shami also entered in the top 10 list of most wickets in ICC World Cup.

Among active cricketers, only Australia’s Mitchell Starc (59) and New Zealand’s Trent Boult (49) are above Shami in the list.

The likes of Javagal Srinath, Jasprit Bumrah and Anil Kumble feature in the top five list of most wickets for India in ODI World Cup.

Left-handed opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan has been a consistent performer both for the Indian cricket team and Team Delhi in the Indian T20 League.

Having made his T20I debut against West Indies in 2011, the 35-year-old has established himself as a big match player for India in the shortest format of the game.

Dhawan has played 68 T20Is for the Men in Blue, amassing 1759 runs at an average of 27.92 and strike rate of 126.36. He is currently the third-highest run-getter for India in T20Is, only behind Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

The Delhi-born cricketer holds the record for most runs (689) by a batsman in a calendar year (2018) in cricket’s shortest format.

The Indian T20 League has seen Dhawan score some impressive runs for Delhi and Hyderabad. The southpaw is second on the list of most runs scored by a batsman in the Indian T20 League's history, with 5619 runs at an average of 37.77 and a strike rate of 127.27. Currently, Bangalore captain Virat Kohli leads the list with 6081 runs in 200 games.

Dhawan also became just the third batsman to score 400-plus runs in six consecutive Indian T20 League seasons between 2016 and 2021. The other two players to achieve the feat are Suresh Raina and David Warner.

Bowlers who dismissed Shikhar Dhawan the most in T20 cricket

Australia all-rounder James Faulkner, Indian pacer Mohit Sharma, Sri Lankan legend Lasith Malinga and other fast bowlers, including Praveen Kumar, Shane Watson and Zaheer Khan, have dismissed Shikhar Dhawan the most times (4) in T20 cricket.

Dhawan has been dropped quite a few times from the Indian cricket team squad, given his struggles with pace bowlers. He has often been criticised for maintaining a slow strike rate and failing to hit big shots from the beginning of his T20 innings.

It has been a decade since Mahendra Singh Dhoni hit the iconic six to seal the 2011 ICC World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium, thereby making India the first team to lift the World Cup trophy on home soil.

The Indian cricket team has gone from strength to strength in world cricket since then but where are the players now?.

Here’s a look at the current status of the players from the 2011 World Cup-winning Indian team.

2011 World Cup-winning Indian team: Playing XI for final vs Sri Lanka

Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag (vice-captain), Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain and wicket-keeper), Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Munaf Patel, S Sreesanth

Sachin Tendulkar: The Master Blaster ended the 2011 World Cup as the second-highest run-getter with 482 runs, with two centuries. He played an important role in India clinching the title.

Sachin continued playing until the 2012 Asia Cup, where he reached his 100th international century and retired from ODIs thereafter. Meanwhile, Tendulkar’s Test career continued till November 2013, when he played his 200th Test match and retired from all forms of cricket.

Sachin Tendulkar is now the 'Icon' of Mumbai in the Indian T20 League and also makes occasional appearances on several talk shows.

Virender Sehwag: It was Tendulkar-Sehwag’s opening pair that had propelled India to strong starts at the 2011 World Cup. The explosive Nawab of Najafgarh had ended the ICC tournament with 380 runs including a century to his name.

Virender Sehwag’s form post the ICC World Cup was inconsistent until early 2013. He was eventually dropped. He continued playing domestic tournaments and was a mainstay in the Indian T20 League until 2015. Sehwag announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in January 2016.

Active on social media, Sehwag has also garnered a fan-following due to his quirky Hindi commentary. He also donned the hat for coaching and mentoring, most notably for Punjab in the Indian T20 League.

Gautam Gambhir: The aggressive southpaw was India’s top scorer in the 2011 World Cup final with 97 runs and is widely considered to be one of India’s unsung heroes. Gautam Gambhir ended the tournament as the sixth-highest scorer with 393 runs.

Surprisingly, Gautam Gambhir’s brilliant batting wasn’t acknowledged with national call-ups as he was dropped from both the Test and limited-overs side soon after. Gambhir continued playing in the Indian T20 League and led Kolkata to two titles in 2012 and 2014. His consistency got him brief stints in the Test side in 2014 and 2016 but Gambhir wasn’t effective enough.

Gambhir announced his retirement in December 2018 to foray into politics and won from the East Delhi constituency in the Lok Sabha elections. He is currently a member of the Parliament.

Virat Kohli: If there has been any Indian player from the 2011 World Cup squad who has grown leaps and bounds, it’s Virat Kohli. Since lifting the World Cup as a 22-year-old, Kohli has gone on to become India’s captain across all formats and create unparalleled records.

The Delhi-lad has amassed over 25 centuries in Tests and over 40 tons in ODIs. He was also honoured with the Sir Garfield Sobers award for ICC Male Cricketer of the Decade and ICC Men’s ODI Player of the Decade at the ICC Awards of the Decade.

After becoming India’s Test captain in 2015 and the ODI and T20I captain in 2017, Virat Kohli led India to the ICC Champions Trophy final in 2017 and the 2019 World Cup semi-final. In the Indian T20 League, Virat Kohli has been piling runs for Bengaluru.

Yuvraj Singh: Amassing 362 runs and scalping 15 wickets in the 2011 World Cup, Yuvraj Singh was India's standout player and was even adjudged the Player of the Tournament.

A 29-year-old Yuvraj was in the form of his life and the all-rounder had a bright future. But months after the World Cup win, Yuvraj was diagnosed with cancer and by the time he could make a comeback to international cricket, it was 2012.

However, Yuvraj Singh was never the same since and after sporadic stints in Indian colours he eventually announced his retirement in June 2019. He still occasionally plays cricket having done so in the Abu Dhabi T10 and the Road Safety World Series.

MS Dhoni: It was the captain’s unbeaten 91-run knock in the final that helped India lift their first 50-over ICC World Cup in 28 years, and his match-winning six is now the stuff of legends.

With two World Cup trophies in his cabinet, MS Dhoni earned the label of ‘Captain Cool? He won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013.

In 2015, MS Dhoni shockingly decided to retire from Test cricket. He played his last ODI match for India in the 2019 ICC World Cup and eventually announced his retirement from international cricket on August 15, 2020.

However, MS Dhoni continues to ply his trade in the Indian T20 League. The Chennai captain has led his team to three titles and will look to lead his franchise to another title in the upcoming edition of the league.

Suresh Raina: The Uttar Pradesh-lad played quite a few valuable knocks in the middle-order during the 2011 World Cup and later went on to become one of India’s most reliable batsmen in the subsequent five years.

Runs eventually dried up for the southpaw and Raina was dropped from the ODI side in 2015 and the T20 side in 2016. Despite his comeback in 2018, he wasn’t selected for the 2019 World Cup. Incidentally, Raina announced his retirement from all forms on August 15, 2020, just moments after Dhoni’s retirement.

Though Raina missed the 2020 Indian T20 League owing to the pandemic, ‘Mr IPL?has been retained for the 2021 edition by Chennai.

Harbhajan Singh: With nine wickets in the 2011 World Cup, Harbhajan Singh was an important member of the side. But his career plummeted rapidly following the historic win. He was dropped from the ODI side after just five months and from the Test side, six months later.

Though his experience fetched him call-ups in the T20I side in 2012 and 2016, the ‘Turbanator?wasn’t a regular in the team. However, Harbhajan remains a mainstay in the Indian T20 League, having played for Mumbai, Chennai and now Kolkata.

Zaheer Khan: With a whopping 21 wickets in nine matches, Zaheer Khan was the wrecker-in-chief for India in the 2011 World Cup and the second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament. However, it could only extend his limited overs career to one more year as the speedster was dropped from the ODI side in 2012

The left-arm pacer remained a mainstay in the Test side though and ended his international career on his terms in 2014

He played in the Indian T20 League until 2017 and after retirement, has become a cricket analyst appearing on several shows. Currently, Zaheer Khan is associated with the Mumbai franchise as the director of cricket, where his primary role is to nurture talents.

Munaf Patel: Taking 11 wickets in eight matches at the 2011 World Cup, Munaf Patel was one of the less revered heroes. Patel’s career saw a downward spiral following the campaign, with injuries and poor form seeing him last play for India in 2011.

He remained a mainstay in the Indian T20 League though and kept trying for a national comeback through Baroda in the domestic circuit, but it didn’t work out. Munaf Patel retired in November 2018 and has featured in the Abu Dhabi T10 League for a few seasons. His most recent exploits were at the 2021 Road Safety World Series.

S Sreesanth: S Sreesanth will be remembered as an expensive bowler for India in the final match, as the Kerala pacer had conceded 52 runs without a wicket in eight overs.

Sreesanth was arrested in 2013 on charges of spot-fixing in the Indian T20 League and BCCI gave him a life ban. The decision was, however, set aside by the Supreme Court in 2019 and his sentence was reduced to seven years.

Sreesanth was always in the public eye as he participated in reality TV shows and a few regional films during that time. He last grabbed headlines during the 2021 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he made his comeback.

Other players from India’s 2011 World Cup squad

Ashish Nehra: Ashish Nehra featured in just two matches in the 2011 World Cup. His career between 2011 and 2016 was afflicted by injuries but a magnificent showing at the Indian T20 League in 2014 and 2015 saw him getting national call-up in 2016. Nehra announced his retirement in 2017.

Ravichandran Ashwin: Having an experienced Harbhajan Singh and in-form Yuvraj Singh as spin bowlers, a young Ravichandran Ashwin could get just two matches in the 2011 World Cup. But, the Chennai tweaker still managed to take four wickets, contributing to the team’s success.

R Ashwin has since gone on to become one of the best spinners in the world and India’s red-ball specialist. He was one of India’s best players during the 2020-21 Border Gavaskar Trophy and has become the second quickest bowler to 400 wickets.

Apart from Kohli, R Ashwin was the only Indian cricketer to be named in the ICC Men’s Test Team of the decade. Ravichandran Ashwin has been a mainstay in the Indian T20 League as well.

Piyush Chawla: The leg-spinner had very little role in the 2011 World Cup with many even considering him lucky to be a part of the squad. Chawla was dropped months after the World Cup win and hasn’t played for India since 2012. He is still a regular Ranji Trophy player and has got success in the Indian T20 League with Kolkata.

Yusuf Pathan: Like Chawla, Yusuf Pathan’s contribution in the 2011 World Cup was insignificant. His international career lasted just over a year although he kept churning runs on the domestic front, particularly in the Indian T20 League.

Most of the time the number 11 batsman making it to the crease in Tests is looked upon as a formality by the opposition bowlers and fielders who are eager to bundle out their opponents at an earliest given opportunity. However, over the years, Test cricket has provided us innumerable examples of lower-order batsmen coming to the rescue for their teams in the most unlikely circumstances. Here, we have a look at some of the best Test knocks by a number 11 batsmen.

Ashton Agar’s 98 against England

Ashton Agar’s Test debut in the opening match of Australia’s tour of England and Scotland in 2013 was one for the ages even though he would have been disappointed that the Aussies ended up on the losing side. Walking into the middle during Australia’s first innings with the score reading 9 for 117 after England had already posted 215 in their first innings, Agar went on to mesmerize spectators by putting on a 163-run partnership with Phillip Hughes.

He seemed to play without any debutant nerves, smashing 12 fours and two sixes en-route to a 101-ball 98. Unfortunately for Australia, they went on to lose the match following an improved batting display by England in the second innings. However, Agar’s heroics at number 11 during the Test doesn’t seem like it will be forgotten in a hurry.

Tino Best’s 95 against England

West Indian speedster Tino Best also scored his highest Test score while batting at 11 against England. Best made 95 for West Indies having walked into the middle as their last batsman with the score on 9 for 283 in the third Test between the teams in the 2012 tour of England. To everyone’s surprise, Best looked unperturbed against England’s bowlers and went on to stitch together a partnership of 143 with Denesh Ramdin, who scored an unbeaten 107.

Best’s knock saw him hit 14 fours and a six as he notched 95 from 112 balls at a strike rate of 84.82. His innings helped West Indies score a formidable 426, which went a long way towards them drawing the match. He also took two wickets for the team with the ball in hand and was deservedly adjudged the Player of the Match.

James Anderson’s 81 against India

While England’s bowlers have endured their fair share of struggles against tailenders, it must be said that their lower order has inflicted a lot of misery on opponents as well. Perhaps the best example of such an innings is James Anderson’s 81 in the first Test of India’s 2014 tour of England. After India had put 457 on the scoreboard in their first innings, England looked in all sorts of trouble when Anderson walked to the crease with the scoreboard showing the hosts reeling at 9 for 298.

Little did anyone know then that Anderson was in no mood to throw in the towel without a fight as he went on to score his highest Test score. He made 81 against India’s frustrated bowlers and was a part of a 198-run stand with Joe Root. Anderson hit 17 boundaries and also claimed four wickets in the match to bag the Player of the Match award as the Test ended in a draw.

Zaheer Khan’s 75 against Bangladesh

Unlike Anderson, Zaheer Khan’s highest Test knock came in a winning cause for his team. The Indian pacer had already left his mark in the opening innings of the first Test during India’s tour of Bangladesh in 2004. He had claimed two wickets as India bundled out the hosts for 184 without breaking much sweat. However, it was Zaheer’s performance with the bat in India’s first innings that came as a surprise to many.

He made 75 from 115 deliveries after hitting 10 fours and a couple of maximums. His knock helped take India’s total from 393 to 526 as he ended up being the perfect foil for Sachin Tendulkar, who made an unbeaten 248 from the other end. Zaheer and Tendulkar eventually put on a 133-run stand together and the former also claimed his third scalp of the Test in Bangladesh’s second innings with India going on to record a comfortable win by an innings and 140 runs.

Richard Collinge’s 68* against Pakistan

The oldest knock by a number 11 on this list, Richard Collinge’s unbeaten 68 came against Pakistan in the third Test of the Asian's tour of New Zealand in 1973. The left-arm medium-fast bowler walked in with the score on 9 for 251 for the Kiwis after Pakistan had already posted 402 in their first innings. However, instead of throwing away his wicket in fashion with most tailenders at the time, Collinge dug deep and put together a 151-run partnership with Brian Hastings, who scored 110 the innings.

Collinge’s unbeaten 68 though cannot be understated and was crucial in New Zealand also scoring 402 in their first innings. He hit six fours as well as a maximum during his knock and proved to be a source of frustration for Pakistan’s bowlers. Collinge also took four wickets ?two in each innings ?in the match, which ended in a draw.

Former Indian pace bowler Zaheer Khan thinks that Indian skipper Virat Kohli’s approach towards captaincy is somewhat similar to that of legendary captain Sourav Ganguly, under whose leadership Zaheer started his career.

Zaheer Khan was the leader of the Indian pace bowling attack during Ganguly’s captaincy era in which the team evolved to gain success overseas and it continued till the team’s 2011 ICC World Cup triumph under MS Dhoni.

The 40-year-old also played under Kohli’s captaincy while he played for the Bengaluru side in the Indian T20 League.

"Sourav made us believe that we can win oversees and inspired us to play with a lot of aggression. Dhoni was calm through tough situations, yet aggressive in his approach. We won the World Cup under him, so it was always very special playing under his leadership.

"Virat is a lot like dada (Ganguly), he is expressive, bold in his decisions and always pumps the team up through crunch situations. His sublime batting form is always reflective of the way he leads the team on field. I wish to see him lift the World Cup for India one day," he explained while speaking to IANS.

India is currently the number one Test team in the world and with the home tour against South Africa about to start, as a part of the World Test Championship, Zaheer thinks India has the best bowling attack in the world which can lead them to clinch the title.

"These are exciting times to be a fast bowler in India. The likes of Bumrah, Shami, Ishant, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Navdeep Saini among others have proven the fact that the current Indian team is a powerhouse of bowling and it is by far the best bowling attack in the world.

"It feels fantastic as a fast bowler and I hope they keep putting in the hard work and maintain the rhythm which has seen them achieve results," he said.

Talking about Jasprit Bumrah, who will be missing the upcoming series due to back injury, Khan said, "I have tracked Jasprit's progress since a very young age. Since his early days with Mumbai Indians he was extremely talented, and I am happy as to how over the years he has been able to nurture himself well and brought out some stellar performances for his team.

"His awkward action has worked really well for him, I feel he just needs to keep working on his fitness and keep evolving without putting too much pressure on himself," he said.
