Torino are at the forefront of the teams with the most goals in a single league season in Europe.

The team, led by top-scorer Valentino Mazzola (25 goals), scored a whopping 125 goals in the 1947-48 Serie A season and went on to claim the Scudetto for the fifth time in the club’s history.

The 1947-48 campaign was the only time in Italian history where the Serie A played with a 21-team structure.

Real Madrid are second for most goals scored by a team in a season. The Los Blancos hit 121 goals in the 2011-12 season.

The 121-goal tally came during Jose Mourinho’s second season in charge of Real Madrid. The Galacticos won the La Liga by a goal difference of 89, a record that would eventually be equalled by Barcelona in the 2014-15 campaign.

Cristiano Ronaldo, a four-time Champions League winner and the highest goal scorer of all time, contributed 45 league goals as Los Blancos beat their previous club record of 107 goals set during the 1989?0 season.

The 2011-12 season will be described as one of the finest campaigns in La Liga history, as Real Madrid managed to break many long-standing records. The campaign saw Los Blancos become the first team in Spanish top-flight history to register 100 points in a season.

The 1949-50 AC Milan team are the third side on our list for most goals in a single league season in Europe. Led from the front by Swedish forward Gunnar Nordahl, who netted 35 times in 37 games, the Rossoneri finished as top-scorers of the 1949-50 season that worked around a 20-team setup.

Barcelona comes in fourth place for teams with the most goals in a single league season. The Blaugrana netted 116 goals in the 2016-17 campaign, and it was the fifth time in six seasons since 2011 (2011-12, 2012-13, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17) they scored 100-plus goals in a La Liga campaign.

Among the campaigns where Barcelona scored 100-plus goals in the league, Lionel Messi finished as the leading scorer thrice (50 in 2011-12, 46 in 2012-13, and 37 in 2016-17).

Manchester City hold the record for most goals scored by the team in a Premier League season. The Cityzens scored 106 goals in 2017-18 Premier League campaign, a record-breaking year that also saw the club register records for most points (100), most away points (50), most wins (32), most away wins (16), most goals (106), best goal difference (+79) and most consecutive victories (18).

Sergio Aguero, who retired from football in December 2021, contributed 21 league goals for the team which received the nickname The Centurions?

The 2017/18 Paris Saint-Germain team is the sixth side on the list. The Paris-based club tallied 108 goals in the Ligue 1, with Edinson Cavani netting 28 times. PSG claimed the domestic quadruple of Ligue 1, Coupe de France, Coupe de la Ligue, Trophée des Champions for the third time since 2014. They would replicate the feat of scoring 100-plus goals once again in the following season as they hit 105 goals.

Chelsea are eighth on our list for most goals in a single season. The Blues scored 103 goals in the 2009/10 league campaign and became the first Premier League club in history to amass triple figures in a single campaign. The performance meant Carlo Ancelotti’s Chelsea team became the first side since the 1962 Tottenham side to score 100 goals in the English top flight.

Bayern Munich hold the German record for most goals in a single season. The Bavarians netted 101 goals in the 1972-73 season, where Gerd Muller set the record for most league goals in a campaign (40).

49 years later, the Bayern Munich team of 2020-21 would once again score 100 or more goals in a single league campaign. Furthermore, Muller’s record of most league goals in a single season would be broken by Robert Lewandowski (41 goals).

Torino (TOR) host a confident Juventus (JUV) side at Olimpico di Torino in Matchday 7 of Serie A 2021-22 on Saturday, October 2. The clash between these teams will be the first Turin derby or Derby della Mole of the season.

TOR vs JUV Dream11 prediction

Both TOR and JUV have endured a similar run of form in the 2021-22 Serie A season, winning only two of their six matches so far. Momentum, however, will be on Juventus?side considering the Old Lady head into the fixture on the back of a succession of victories across all competitions, including a victory against Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League in midweek.

Juventus defeated Sampdoria 3-2 at home last weekend before following it up with a 1-0 win over reigning European champions Chelsea. As for Torino, they have drawn their last two matches, which makes a Juventus win the most likely outcome on Saturday.

TOR vs JUV Dream11 team tips for Serie A 2021-22

Top tip: Best forward

With Alvaro Morata and Paulo Dybala out, the onus will be on Federico Chiesa, who scored the only goal against Chelsea in the Champions League. Chiesa has scored just two goals this season but can be expected to add to his tally come Saturday.

Top tip: Best midfielder

Manuel Locatelli has been exceptional for Juventus this season. The 23-year-old has scored a goal and has assisted once this season. With Aaron Ramsey and Arthur Melo doubtful, Locatelli will once again be in the spotlight at the center of the park with great expectations of making things happen from midfield on his shoulders.

Top tip: Best defender and goal-keeper

Matthijs de Ligt is a great option to go with amongst defenders. The 22-year-old centre-half has accumulated 142 fantasy points this season; a tally which is only bettered by fellow centre-back Leonardo Bonucci (198) among defenders from the Serie A.

As for a goal-keeper, Juventus?Wojciech Szczesny remains the undisputed choice. He’s been selected by 64.87% of fantasy users and with good reason considering the defence he has in front of him. Blessed with a safe pair of hands, Szczesny seems poised for another clean sheet to make it back-to-back shutouts.

TOR vs JUV probable playing XI

TOR playing XI (probable): Vanja Milinkovic-Savic (goalkeeper), David Zima, Gleison Bremer, Ricardo Rodriguez, Mergim Vojvoda, Daniele Baselli, Sasa Lukic, Cristian Ansaldi (captain), Karol Linetty, Josip Brekalo, Antonio Sanabria

JUV playing XI (probable): Wojciech Szczesny (goalkeeper), Danilo, Leonardo Bonucci (captain), Matthijs de Ligt, Alex Sandro, Weston McKennie, Manuel Locatelli, Rodrigo Bentancur, Dejan Kulusevski, Federico Bernardeschi, Federico Chiesa

After struggling to find a foothold in Mikel Arteta's Arsenal side, midfielder Lucas Torreira is expected to leave the Emirates behind him.

Speaking to Sport 890, the 24-year-old said he 'would respect' any decision to sell him.

“Today I need to think about my future very well.

“I have a contract with the club and I have to respect it, obviously, if I have to leave it will be for the best.

“We have to be calm and wait.?/p>

Italy beckons for Torreira

The Uruguayan, who was signed from Serie A side Sampdoria by Arsenal for 26 million euros two seasons ago, could be on his way back to the Italian championship, as he has been linked with both AC Milan and Torino.

TuttoMercatoWeb has claimed that Arsenal will be reinvesting any funds they receive from selling Torreira into possibly going after AS Roma midfielder Amadou Diawara.

As per the Italian publication, while the club has 'tested the waters' for the Guinean, their prime focus will be to re-sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to a new deal as well as signing a free transfer of Willian from Chelsea.

While Torreira was a regular feature under previous Gunners boss Unai Emery, he has increasingly been used as a substitute under Arteta.

Juventus became the first side in Europe’s top five leagues to win nine consecutive domestic titles after their 2-0 win over Sampdoria on Sunday night. It was the Old Lady’s 36th league title and continued their dominance in Italy with AC Milan being the last club apart from Juventus to have won the Serie A title in 2011.

On that note, we have a look at the clubs from across Europe’s top five that have dominated their respective leagues and won the most consecutive top division titles.

Torino

One of European football’s first dominant forces, the Torino side of the 40s were considered a joy to watch. Fondly known as the Grande Torino, the club’s greatest period saw them win five titles in a row discounting the interruption to the league due to the second World War. Valentino Mazzola was their captain and the club’s players during this time were the backbone of the Italian national side. They also won the Coppa Italia in 1943, making them the first team to win the Scudetto and Coppa Italia double in the same season.

Sadly, their success came to an abrupt end in 1949 when an airliner carrying the entire team crashed in Turin.

Real Madrid

Like Torino, Real Madrid have also won their domestic league for five seasons running. Unlike, Torino though they did it on two separate occasions, with the first period between 1960 to 1965 and the second from 1985 to 1990. While they were blessed with quality individuals all over the pitch, the superstars of the Real team during their domestic and European title triumphs in the sixties were the legendary Alfredo Di Stéfano and Ferenc Puskás. Their success in the 80s was centred around home-grown academy stars like Emilio Butragueño, Míchel, Manuel Sanchís, Martín Vázquez and Miguel Pardeza.

Inter Milan

The last club before Juventus to stamp their authority in the Italian Serie A, Inter Milan won five successive domestic titles from 2005 to 2010. After the Calciopoli match-fixing scandal that saw Juventus stripped of the 2005-06 league title, Inter were handed the domestic crown. I Nerazzurri went on to win four more consecutive leagues from 2006 to 2010 and also added a cherry on top with a UEFA Champions League under the stewardship of Jose Mourinho.

Olympique Lyonnais

All of Lyon’s seven French league conquests in the club’s history came consecutively in what was a record-setting streak that started in 2001 and ended in 2008. A few of the key personnel behind their sustained domestic success following the turn of the millennium were goalkeeper Grégory Coupet and winger Sidney Govou. Both Coupet and Govou along with Juninho, who was the creative force of the side, were part of all seven title wins with Lyon. One of the most feared dead-ball specialists, Juninho’s unerring free-kicks that frequently rattled the back of the net was a trademark of this team.

Bayern Munich

After Jurgen Klopp’s league successes with Borussia Dortmund in 2011 and 2012, Bayern Munich reclaimed the Bundesliga title and have tightened their grip on the league crown ever since. Their latest league win last month made it eight consecutive domestic titles for the Bavarians. Besides their domestic dominance, Bayern also won a UEFA Champions title during this era with academy talents like Bastian Schweinsteiger, Philipp Lahm, Thomas Müller and later Joshua Kimmich playing key roles in the club’s success. Another defining attribute of this Bayern side were their talented wingers, starting with Franck Ribéry and Arjen Robben to Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry.

Juventus

Even though they are now the only team in the history of Europe’s top five leagues to win nine successive domestic league titles, Juventus?dominance in Italy looks like it is set to continue for some time. The Old Lady have had managers like Antonio Conte, Massimiliano Allegri and Maurizio Sarri during their nine-year reign at the pinnacle of Italian football.

Besides the nine Serie A crowns, they have won all other domestic cups and maintained their hunger for continuous success. However, something that has still eluded them during this era of success is the UEFA Champions League ?a holy grail of sorts for the Italian champions. With five-time Champions League winner Cristiano Ronaldo now the talisman of the team, it’s perhaps just a matter of time before they breach that final frontier.

Gianluigi Buffon set a new Serie A appearances record on Saturday as Juventus beat Torino 4-1 in the Turin derby to move seven points clear at the top of the table after nearest challengers Lazio lost to a Zlatan Ibrahimovic-inspired AC Milan.

The 42-year-old goalkeeper passed the previous record of 647 appearances he jointly held with AC Milan great Paolo Maldini as he started the game at the Allianz Stadium.

"Maybe... He definitely won't beat the record for scoring goals, though," coach Maurizio Sarri told Sky Sport Italia when asked if Buffon could still play the 35 games he needs to equal Alessandro Del Piero's overall record total of Juventus appearances.

Cristiano Ronaldo was among the scorers, becoming the first Juve player to score 25 Serie A goals in a season in 59 years, as Sarri's men moved further clear of second-placed Lazio, who were beaten 3-0 by Milan at the Stadio Olimpico.

"We were a bit chaotic at the start of the second half, but when fatigue set in, that's when our quality emerged," added Sarri.

Buffon, who spent last season at French club Paris Saint-Germain before rejoining Juve this term, signed a one-year contract extension earlier this week.

The record comes 25 years after Buffon made his Serie A debut for Parma and 19 years after he first signed for Juventus.

- Ronaldo breaks free-kick duck -

The hosts wasted little time in taking the lead as Paulo Dybala scored in the third minute with an excellent individual goal, collecting Juan Cuadrado's pass before jinking past two defenders and firing a left-footed shot into the roof of the net.

Juventus doubled the advantage just before the half hour as Ronaldo charged forward before laying the ball off for Cuadrado to drive low into the corner of the net.

Torino gave themselves hope when Andrea Belotti scored a penalty past Buffon in the sixth minute of first-half injury-time.

Simone Verdi was denied an equaliser early in the second half by the linesman's flag, but Ronaldo put the game to bed in the 61st minute with a brilliant free-kick.

It was the first time the five-time Ballon d'Or winner had scored a free-kick in Serie A and it was his 25th league goal of the campaign, making the Portuguese the first Juventus player to achieve that feat since Omar Sivori in the 1960-61 season.

"I really needed that free-kick goal so I could get some confidence back," Ronaldo said after scoring his first direct free-kick at the 43rd attempt for Juve.

Juve were not done and made it four with three minutes remaining as Torino defender Koffi Djidji put through his own net.

They received help in their bid for a ninth straight Serie A title later in the day as Ibrahimovic scored one goal and assisted on another in his first start since the coronavirus lockdown.

Lazio struggled to find their cutting edge without a recognised striker, as the league's leading scorer Ciro Immobile and his natural replacement Felipe Caicedo were both suspended.

The away side took the lead midway through the first half when Ibrahimovic teed up Hakan Calhanoglu to score with a long-range deflected effort.

The 38-year-old Swede netted a penalty in the 34th minute to score his fifth goal since rejoining Milan from LA Galaxy in January.

Ibrahimovic was substituted at half-time, but his replacement Ante Rebic put the result beyond doubt in the 59th minute as Lazio's dream of a first league title in 20 years suffered a potentially fatal blow.

"We've got to look forward and prepare for the next match. We know the journey we have taken and have no intention of letting go," Lazio coach Simone Inzaghi told DAZN.

Milan, unbeaten in four games since the resumption, moved above Napoli into sixth, which carries qualification for the Europa League.

Serie A made its comeback this weekend following a break brought about by the pandemic crisis that hit Italy especially hard, with Atalanta back thrilling fans and Romelu Lukaku continuing his brilliant debut season for Inter Milan.

We look at five of the key moments from the first round of matches after three months away:

Lukaku continues where he left off

The Belgian's impressive debut season with Inter Milan continued on Sunday against relegation strugglers Sampdoria, with his first-half strike taking his league tally to 18 goals this term.

Lukaku has already bettered former Brazilian star Ronaldo's debut season total of 16 and has scored 24 times in all competitions for Inter since joining from Manchester United.

Inter sit six points adrift of league leaders Juve with 12 matches remaining and will need Lukaku to maintain his form if they are to claim a first Serie A title since winning the treble under Jose Mourinho in 2010.

"It was very important to win today, as from now to the end of the season it's 12 finals, they are all life or death," Lukaku told Sky Sport Italia.

Eriksen thrives again

Inter were not at their best against Sampdoria, but coach Antonio Conte would have been content with a 2-1 win that keeps their title hopes alive and by the performance of Christian Eriksen.

The January signing from Tottenham Hotspur, who scored directly from a corner in the Italian Cup semi-final loss to Napoli, was handed a more central role behind forwards Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez.

The Dane, who made 62 assists during his seven years in the Premier League, laid on Lukaku's opening goal in another influential display.

Atalanta burst into life after virus 'warfare'

Atalanta continued their remarkable campaign exactly where they left off with Sunday's 4-1 win over Sassuolo, bringing some joy to a city that was at one point the global epicentre of the global pandemic.

"This is not just any restart. It's for a region that has suffered three months of living in warfare. Nobody can forget the sounds of the ambulances streaking down the street," said director Umberto Marino pre-match.

The minute's silence before the match was accompanied by a video honouring the near 35,000 people who died and a song called "Rinascero, Rinascerai" (I will be born again, you will be born again).

Then the goals rained down, three in the first 37 minutes with two more chalked off and goalscorer Duvan Zapata also hitting the bar. With 74 goals in 26 league matches, Atalanta are well on course to net over 100 times this season.

They will be one of the eight clubs to take part in the last eight Champions League tournament set to be held in Lisbon in August, and Sunday's spectacular win showed why they are favourites to rejoin Europe's elite next season.

Black Lives Matter protests

While matches in the Bundesliga and Premier League have begun with teams taking a knee in honour of the global Black Lives Matter, the approach has been more ad hoc in Italy.

Neither match on Saturday began with players taking the knee as a minute's silence is held for those killed by the disease, although Cameroonian Nicolas NKoulou did after giving Torino the lead in their 1-1 draw over Parma.

However, Torino drew heavy criticism on social media for publishing a tweet with the #BlackLivesMatter hashtag with an image of NKoulou kneeling before Italy striker Andrea Belotti, who is white.

Lukaku also took a knee after his goal on Sunday.

Deflating start

Just five seconds had passed of Serie A's comeback fixture when the referee at Turin's Stadio Olimpico Massimiliano Irrati had to call the players back to retake kick off -- thanks to a deflated ball.

It was an inauspicious restart to the top division after what had been a successful return of football over the previous week, with Napoli winning the Italian Cup after entertaining last four and final fixtures in front of large terrestrial TV audiences.

Juventus star Paulo Dybala revealed Wednesday that he has been given the all-clear six weeks after contracting the disease that has affected the world, but Serie A rivals Torino confirmed that one of their players had tested positive.

"Many people talked in the past weeks ... but I can finally confirm that I am healed. Thank you once again for your support and my thoughts on all who are still suffering from it. Take care," tweeted the 26-year-old Argentina forward.

But city rivals Torino revealed that an unnamed player had been diagnosed with the global pandemic during testing of players and staff as Serie A teams return to individual training this week.

"The football player, currently asymptomatic, was immediately placed in quarantine and will be constantly monitored."

Torino have been one of the clubs to express concerns about a return to competition as Italy grapples with a pandemic which has killed nearly 30,000 people in the country.

Torino president Urbano Cairo this week conceded there were "divergent opinions" even if officially all 20 Serie A teams have backed completing the season suspended since March 10.

Dybala was one of three Juventus players to test positive along with Italy defender Daniele Rugani and France's Blaise Matuidi.

Read | Bundesliga to resume on May 15

Rugani was the first Italian top-flight footballer diagnosed with the virus on March 11. Both he and World Cup winner Matuidi recovered mid-April.

Dybala, on the other hand, was diagnosed on March 22, along with his girlfriend Oriana, who recovered sooner from the disease. He posted a picture of himself on Instagram with his arms outstretched looking at the sky: "My face says it all, I'm finally cured from Covid-19."

Italian champions Juventus also confirmed that their Argentine star had recovered.

"Dybala performed, as per protocol, a double check with diagnostic tests (swabs), which came back with negative results," Juventus said in a statement.

"The player has, therefore, recovered and will no longer be subjected to the home isolation regime."

On Thursday, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) will meet the government's Technical Scientific Committee to discuss the medical protocol for group training scheduled on May 18.

But sports minister Vincenzo Spadafora warned that it was "impossible to set a date" for a return to Serie A action before seeing how the contagion evolves over the coming weeks.
