When people discuss the all-time great players in cricket history, Don Bradman is often mentioned. Lovingly called ‘The Don? Bradman is often considered one of the best batsmen ever. While calling him the pinnacle of batting seems bold, his remarkable legacy and unbelievable statistics make a compelling case.

Bradman was a dominant player

Bradman played during a time when batting was more difficult than it is today. He played in uncovered pitches that were unpredictable. During those days, there was limited protective gear, so they didn’t play with helmets, gloves, or pads. That meant it would have been tougher and more dangerous to be a batsman, but Bradman made it look easy.

During his career, Bradman was dominant, which was enough for England to use their infamous Bodyline tactic to stop him. That was a brutal and short-pitched attack aimed at his body, so he would find it tough to bat away. Despite that being effective, Bradman still affected the game with good batting.

That is proven by his Test numbers, averaging 99.4 runs in matches. Those are absurd numbers because it meant he would have had a century in almost every match he played. Bradman was not only a prolific batsman, but he was also the biggest threat on the field.

Bradman’s amazing impact

During the Great Depression in Australia, the nation needed hope and inspiration. For a lot of people, Bradman was the man who lifted their spirits at a time when the country was struggling. Cricket was the sport that enticed people and Bradman consistently delivered awesome performances, which kept the people happy and captivated.

The country became a dominant force in world cricket because of Bradman. He was even knighted for his services to the game, one of a few cricketers to receive such an honour. Bradman has a lasting legacy because of his achievements on the field, with tributes found across Australia through stamps, coins, museums, and awards in his honour.

Bradman stacks up to the modern greats

Bradman will inevitably get compared to the modern-day greats like Sachin Tendulkar, Steve Smith, and Virat Kohli. Today’s players benefit from having advanced equipment and optimal pitch conditions, Bradman did not have that back in the day. Despite that, he kept up with their numbers, which is an impressive feat due to the sport’s evolution since Bradman’s playing days.

Even though he played fewer matches, Bradman’s dominance still stands tall against everyone. He has a strong case for being one of the greatest batsmen in history, possibly the greatest to ever do it. The Don stands head and shoulders above most of the cricket world, potentially surpassing every batsman who has ever played the sport.

Joe Root has become one of the most recognisable names in English cricket history due to his leadership and productivity. He made the latest headlines in May 2025 after becoming the first English player and fifth-ever player to score more than 13,000 runs in Test cricket.

This is the latest feat in his career, which deserves a deeper dive. Have a look at why Root deserves more love as a superstar cricket player.

Consistent performance across many formats

A big part of why Root is a star player is his ability to adapt. He is a well-travelled player as he has performed at the highest level across all three formats of cricket. He knows how to play more patiently in Test cricket, keep up with the pace that picks up in ODI, and compete in the fast-paced environment of the T20 format.

This ability to naturally switch across formats made him invaluable to English cricket. He was a mainstay for England for over a decade, getting over 30 centuries and pulling off magical moments often.

A good example of this is his innings of 180 and 200 in 2013 and 2014. It was a strong performance that cemented him as one of England’s top players and leaders.

England had outstanding batting strength because of Joe Root. He was a big part of the team as a productive batsman despite the rest of the team’s struggles with inconsistent batting outside of Root.

A reliable leader

Root’s legacy goes beyond the stats as he was England’s Test captain for a long time. He took over as captain in 2017 and lasted until 2022 after leading them 64 times. Root always had strong leadership qualities, as he always stayed calm under pressure. He led from the front with a bat, but he never shied away from criticism.

Root handled the role with humility and grace amidst all the ups and downs. He was a big part of how England rebuilt the team, as he brought the stability the team needed after a tough time in the mid-2010s. When he stepped away, he knew it was time. However, he was proud of what he did as a leader.

He is respected by his peers

The cricketing world respects Root for what he has done as a player. He carries himself with the right attitude, which helps him earn everyone’s respect. Players like Steve Smith and Kane Williamson loved watching and playing against him.

With all these reasons, it is fair to say that Root deserves more respect. He is a top-tier player, and he will continue to stand out as a superstar for England.

After Australia lost in the semi-finals of the 2025 Champions Trophy against India, captain Steve Smith has announced his retirement from One-Day International (ODI) cricket. This comes after his superb performance for the Aussies, scoring a team-leading 73 runs on Tuesday, March 4, 2025.

Unfortunately for the Aussies, their captain and arguably the best player is stepping away from the ODI format. It is a big day as Australia will need to get a valid replacement for a top star.

Smith loved his time playing for Australia’s ODI team

At 35 years of age, Smith has had a storied career with Australia, especially for its ODI team. He made his first ODI debut in February 2010 against the West Indies, and he has not looked back since. Smith rose in the ranks as a promising player and ended up being the team captain for multiple years.

Now, he is bidding farewell to the national team. It was an emotional moment for him, but thankfully, he will still be available to be selected for T20 internationals and test matches.

Smith said, ‘It has been a great ride and I have loved every minute of it. There have been so many amazing times and wonderful memories. Winning two World Cups was a great highlight along with the many fantastic teammates who shared the journey. Now is a great opportunity for people to start preparing for the 2027 World Cup?

Smith is the gold standard for Australian cricketers

Steve ascended into the captaincy in 2015 and lasted until 2018. He was sacked as part of his punishment for his involvement in the ball-tampering scandal during the test series in South Africa. He returned a year later after serving his ban and continued to play well.

He has been superb as a batter throughout his career, so losing that in the ODI format is a big loss. Steve is not only a consistent performer with his bat, but he is also a valuable leader for the team. He might not have got the full-time captaincy, but he served as an interim captain across many tournaments, including the Champions Trophy.

Cricket Australia supports his decision to step away from ODI, but he will be available for selection in the other two formats. Smith has set the gold standard for ODI cricketers, so Australia must do well with the development of the younger players who will succeed him.

As a two-time World Cup winner in his career, Smith deserves recognition from the Aussie fans and the rest of the cricket world. This is a sad day for the cricket community, especially those who loved Smith in the ODI format.

Steve Smith has officially entered Test cricket’s exclusive 10,000-run club on the 29th of January 2025, becoming the fourth Australian player after Allan Border, Steve Waugh, and Ricky Ponting. He reached the milestone in style, scoring his 35th century in the first Test series against Sri Lanka.

Smith is the 15th player in history to achieve this feat. Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar leads the club with 15,921 runs, followed by Ponting (13,378) and Jacques Kallis (13,289). Smith reached the 10,000-run mark in just 205 innings, making him the fifth-fastest to accomplish the feat.

Can Smith surpass the greats?

Despite his success, surpassing Tendulkar’s record seems unlikely for Smith. At 35, Smith faces the physical and mental challenges of modern cricket, which has seen many players?careers cut short. His 2018 suspension also cost him a year of valuable playing time.

However, Smith has a chance to retire with the highest batting average in the 10K club. His current average of 56.74 is just behind Kumar Sangakkara’s 57.4. With his recent strong performances, Smith’s legacy as one of the game’s greatest batsmen is already secure.

The Gabba is one of the oldest cricket grounds located in Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, Australia.

Established in 1895, The Gabba is owned by the Queensland Government and has a seating capacity of around 37,000.

Also known as the Brisbane Cricket Ground, The Gabba serves as the home ground of the Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League (BBL) and Women’s Bash League (WBBL) and also for the Queensland Bulls in domestic cricket.

Apart from cricket, The Gabba is known to be a multi-speciality stadium which has staged athletics, rugby league, rugby union, Australian rules football, Association football, cycling, baseball, pony, greyhound racing and concerts.

The Gabba hosted its first international cricket match, a Test played between Australia and South Africa in December 1931. Under the leadership of Bill Woodfull, Australia won the Test by an innings and 163 runs.

It later staged its first One-Day International (ODI) that featured England and West Indies in December 1979.

The Gabba hosted its first-ever T20 international played between hosts Australia and South Africa in January 2006. Since then, it has staged 10 T20Is so far.

With that being said, let’s have a look at The Gabba T20 records and stats.

The Gabba T20 records and stats

Highest total

The Australia cricket team recorded the highest total at The Gabba in T20 international cricket. During the only T20I of South Africa’s tour of Australia in January 2006, the hosts posted 209/3 in their 20 overs at the Brisbane Cricket Ground. Electing to bat first, Australia rode on Damien Martyn’s 56-ball 96 and Andrew Symonds?unbeaten 54 off just 26 balls to register a record T20I total at the venue. In reply, South Africa were bowled out for 114 in 18.3 overs as Australia won the T20I by 95 runs.

Lowest total

The South Africa cricket team registered the lowest total at The Gabba in T20 international cricket. South Africa were bundled out for 114 while chasing Australia’s 209/3 in the first-ever T20I at the Brisbane Cricket Ground in January 2006. Chasing 210, South Africa lost wickets at regular intervals as they later lost the game by 95 runs. Wicketkeeper-batter Mark Boucher top-scored for South Africa with 29. For Australia, Nathan Bracken, Mick Lewis, James Hopes and Andrew Symonds picked up two wickets each.

Most runs

Former Australia cricketer David Warner has the most runs at The Gabba in the T20I format. Between 2009 and 2022, David Warner amassed 145 runs in four T20Is at the Brisbane Cricket Ground at an average of 48.33 and a strike rate of 143.56. The swashbuckling southpaw slammed two T20I fifties at The Gabba. Former Australia captain Aaron Finch features second on the list with 109 runs in five matches at a strike rate of 115.95.

Most wickets

Australia spinner Adam Zampa has picked up the most wickets at this venue in T20 international cricket. The leg-spinner has already bagged seven wickets in just four T20Is at an average of 13.57 and an impressive economy of 5.93. Zampa’s 2/19 against Ireland during an ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022 group match is his best bowling figures at The Gabba in cricket’s shortest format. His teammate Mitchell Starc is second on the list with six wickets in two T20Is while Pat Cummins has also claimed six scalps in three games at The Gabba.

Highest individual score

Former Australia top-order batter Damien Martyn registered the highest individual score at this ground in T20 international cricket. Opening the batting, Damien Martyn slammed 96 off 56 balls against South Africa in the only T20I of the series in January 2006. His brilliant knock was laced with seven fours and five maximums. Martyn’s scintillating knock helped Australia post a massive total of 209/3 in their allotted overs. Later, Australia bowled out South Africa for 114 to register a 95-run win in Brisbane.

Best bowling figures

Australia’s star pacer Mitchell Starc has the best bowling figures at The Gabba in T20 international cricket. The left-arm pacer recorded match-winning figures of 4/20 against West Indies in the second T20I of a two-match series in October 2022. Defending 178, Mitchell Starc dismissed Kyle Mayers, captain Nicholas Pooran, Jason Holder and Odean Smith to restrict West Indies to 147/8 in their allotted overs. Earlier, David Warner’s 75 and Tim David’s 42 powered Australia to 178/7 in their 20 overs as the hosts won the game by 31 runs.

Highest partnership

Australia’s David Warner and Steven Smith hold the record for the highest partnership at The Gabba in T20 international cricket. David Warner and Steven Smith forged an unbeaten 117-run stand for the second wicket while chasing Sri Lanka’s 117 in October 2019. While Warner scored 60 not out, Smith remained unbeaten on 53 to help Australia chase down the target in just 13 overs. Australia won the second T20I by nine wickets and later clinched the three-match T20I series 3-0.

The World Test Championship, the premier competition in Test cricket, involves a two-year cycle where teams will play Test matches against others with the top two teams in the points table at the end of the cycle contesting in the Final.

The current edition of the WTC began with the Ashes series between England and Australia in June 2023 with the Final being scheduled in June 2025 at England.

India is the only team to have played in consecutive Finals of the WTC in 2021 and 2023 but unfortunately ended up on the losing side on both occasions. The Men in Blue lead the charts in the WTC 2023-2025 edition too and are in pole position to qualify for a historic third-straight Final in 2025.

WTC has given Test cricket a much-needed fillip and context that it has been searching for long. With points up for grabs in every match, teams have started pushing for wins irrespective of the result of the series.

Batters have also started to become more positive with teams preferring a win over a draw. As a result, they have piled on the runs in the longest format, in quick time too, after the introduction of the WTC.

In this article, we glance through the list of batters with the most runs in the history of the WTC.

Joe Root | 4948 runs

Joe Root leads the way in the list of top scorers in the history of the WTC after it was introduced in 2019. The England batter has amassed 4948 runs from 57 matches, including 16 hundreds and 20 fifties, at an impressive average of 52.08.

Root finished second on the list of top-scorers in the inaugural edition of the WTC from 2019 to 2021 before jumping to the top spot in the next edition. In the current edition too, he is on top of the pile with 1373 runs from just 15 matches.

Root made history by becoming the England batter with the most Test Hundreds when he scored centuries in both innings of the second Test against Sri Lanka in August 2024 to move to 34 centuries in the longest format of the game.

Marnus Labuschagne | 3904 runs

Marnus Labuschagne is second on the list of top run-getters in the history of the WTC with 3904 runs from 45 matches at an average of 52.05. The Aussie has also scored 11 centuries in the WTC.

Labuschagne, who came into the side as a concussion substitute for Steve Smith in the 2019 Ashes series against England, received the opportunity that came his way with both hands. He finished as the top-scorer in the first WTC cycle from 2019 to 2021 with 1675 runs at an astonishing average of 72.82.

Labuschagne also played a key role in taking Australia to the WTC title in 2023 finishing third in the list of top run-scorers in that cycle.

Steve Smith | 3486 runs

Steve Smith, with 3486 runs from 45 matches, is third on the list of players with the most runs in the history of the WTC. Smith has also scored nine hundreds and 17 fifties at an average of 50.52 in the World Test Championship.

Smith was third in the list of top run-getters in the first WTC cycle and also played a crucial role in the Final of the WTC 2023 to help Australia beat India. He scored a brilliant century in the first innings and along with Travis Head batted India out of the contest.

Ben Stokes | 3101 runs

Ben Stokes is fourth on the list of batters with the most runs in the WTC with 3101 runs from 48 matches at an average of 37.81. The southpaw has seven hundreds and 16 half-centuries to his name in the competition.

Stokes?superhuman effort, scoring an unbeaten 135, at Headingley where he single-handedly won the 2019 Ashes Test against Australia by a solitary wicket was one for the ages.

The England captain almost repeated the act in the Lord’s Test in Ashes 2023 but was dismissed for 155 as England fell short by 43 runs.

Australia's Steve Smith and New Zealand's Kane Williamson hold the record for the most hundreds in Test cricket among the ‘Fab Four?with 32 tons each.

The Fab Four - short for ‘Fabulous Four?- is a term coined by cricket pundits, which clubs together the top four Test batters of the modern era - India’s Virat Kohli, Joe Root, Steve Smith and Kane Williamson.

While Smith has now hit 32 Test tons, Williamson also has notched 32 Test centuries since making his debut in 2010. In March 2023, he also became the only Kiwis player to hit six double centuries in the format when he achieved the feat against Sri Lanka.

Former England captain Joe Root is second on the list. Root is the first batter among the ‘Fab Four?to breach the 10,000-run mark in Test cricket. He achieved the feat in the first Test against New Zealand at the Lord’s in 2022.

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli has scored 29 Test centuries in his red-ball cricket career so far.

He is currently the fourth-most prolific batter among the ‘Fab Four?with more than 8,000 runs in red-ball cricket.

Australia’s Steve Smith earlier equalled Virat Kohli’s tally for centuries with a 226-ball 131 that helped his team secure a draw against India in Sydney in 2021.

However, what makes Steve Smith stand out among the other 'Fab Four' batters is his batting average. The former Australia captain has scored more than 9,000 runs in over 100 Test matches at an average of almost 60, making him the most consistent batter among the rest.
