The Pakistan vs Bangladesh Test 2024 cricket series will start in Rawalpindi on Wednesday, August 21.

The upcoming two-match Test series is part of the ongoing ICC ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25.

As per the Pakistan vs Bangladesh Test 2024 schedule, both the Tests will be played at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

Ranked sixth in the ICC men’s Test team rankings, Pakistan have played five Tests in the current WTC cycle.

With two victories and three defeats, Pakistan are placed sixth in the WTC 2023-25 standings with a points percentage of 36.66%. They are scheduled to play nine more Tests in the ongoing WTC cycle.

Ahead of the two-match Test series, the Pakistan national cricket team has suffered a huge blow as fast bowler Aamir Jamal has been released due to fitness concerns.

Shan Masood will once again lead Pakistan while Saud Shakeel will be his deputy.

Meanwhile, Pakistan are expected to field an all pace attack in the first Test against Bangladesh.

Left-arm pacer Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Khurram Shehzad and Mir Hamza could be included in the playing XI in Rawalpindi.

Pakistan will enter the first Test against Bangladesh with an all pace attack, with left-arm quick Shaheen Afridi and returning quick Naseem Shah likely to spearhead a fast bowling group that also includes Khurram Shehzad and Mir Hamza.

The hosts last featured in a three-match Test series against Australia, which they lost 0-3 Down Under in January.

On the other hand, the Bangladesh national cricket team will aim to register their first-ever Test win against Pakistan in the longest format.

Since 2001, Bangladesh have never won a Test against Pakistan in their six-series bilateral history.

Currently placed eighth in the ICC men’s Test team rankings, Bangladesh played their last Test series against Sri Lanka in March. Bangladesh lost the two-Test home series 0-2.

Having registered one win and three losses, Bangladesh are languishing eighth in the WTC 2023-25 standings.

The visitors will be led by captain Najmul Hossain Shanto in the upcoming two-match Test series in Pakistan.

Star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been included in the squad after he made himself available for selection last month.

Veteran wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim and right-arm pacer Taskin Ahmed have also made a comeback in the Test squad after recovering from their respective injuries.

Pakistan vs Bangladesh head-to-head in Test cricket

Pakistan have a dominant head-to-head record against Bangladesh in Test cricket, winning 12 of the 13 matches that they have played so far. Bangladesh are yet to win a Test against Pakistan while one game ended in a draw.

Former West Indies captain Dwayne Bravo currently holds the record for picking the most wickets in T20 cricket.

The right-arm medium pacer has bagged 625 wickets in 573 matches at an average of 24.29 and an economy of 8.24. He is the first and the only cricketer to reach 600 wickets in the T20 format.

Apart from playing for the West Indies cricket team, Bravo has donned the jersey of several franchises in the Indian T20 League, Caribbean Premier League, Big Bash, Vitality T20 Blast and Bangladesh Premier League.

Since making his T20I debut against New Zealand in 2006, Bravo has been a vital cog in the West Indies team in the shortest format of the game, winning the ICC World T20 titles in 2012 and 2016.

In his stellar T20 career, the Trinidad and Tobago-born cricketer has claimed the most wickets for Team Chennai in the Indian T20 League, picking 183 wickets in 160 matches at an impressive average of 23.73.

Bravo is followed by Afghanistan's Rashid Khan and West Indies all-rounder Sunil Narine.

Yuzvendra Chahal is the only Indian player to feature in the list of top 10 wicket-takers in T20 cricket.

Besides Bravo, three players - Rashid, Narine and Tahir - have scalped 500 plus T20 wickets.

Interestingly, when T20 cricket was introduced by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in 2003, it was believed that spinners would be clobbered all around the park in the shortest format of the game.

However, since the inception of T20, spinners have played an important role in most games. Five spinners are currently in the top 10 list for most wickets in T20 cricket.

Here’s a look at the top wicket-takers in each edition of the ICC T20 World Cup.

ICC T20 World Cup 2007: Umar Gul

Pakistan fast bowler Umar Gul was in tremendous form in the ICC T20 World Cup 2007 as he played an instrumental role in taking his side to the final with 13 wickets. He was also the pick of the bowlers in the final with 3/28 but ended up on the losing side. Interestingly, he was one of three bowlers who missed hitting the stumps in the bowl out that handed India a victory in a league stage match.

ICC T20 World Cup 2009: Umar Gul

Umar Gul once again was the highest wicket-taker in the tournament for the second consecutive time with 13 wickets. However, this time he went on to win the T20 title with Pakistan after falling agonizingly short in the final against India in the inaugural edition in 2007. He finished with figures of 1/29 in a final against Sri Lanka which Pakistan won comfortably by eight wickets.

ICC T20 World Cup 2010: Dirk Nannes

The T20 World Cup 2010 was the highlight of Dirk Nannes?career after he finished as the highest wicket-taker with 14 scalps, including a best of 4/18 against Bangladesh. Though he had a short T20 career, Nannes made the most of it at the 2010 World Cup by playing a key role as Australia progressed to the final before succumbing to defeat against England.

ICC T20 World Cup 2012: Ajantha Mendis

Sri Lanka’s Ajantha Mendis spun a web around opposition batsmen in the ICC T20 World Cup 2012. He topped the wicket-taking charts with 15 wickets. In the very first match of the tournament, Mendis returned with mind-boggling figures of 6/8 against Zimbabwe. He also bowled magnificently in the final against West Indies with a bowling effort of 4/12 although it wasn’t enough to help Sri Lanka win the coveted T20 title.

ICC T20 World Cup 2014: Imran Tahir & Ahsan Malik

South Africa’s Imran Tahir and Netherlands?Ahsan Malik were the joint leading wicket-takers in the ICC T20 World Cup 2014 with 12 scalps apiece. Tahir produced a best bowling effort of 4/21 against the Dutch while Malik made it to the top of the wicket-takers list as an associate bowler. Malik scalped 5/19 versus South Africa but the Proteas eventually crashed out in the semi-finals, while Netherlands could not go past the group stages.

ICC T20 World Cup 2016: Mohammad Nabi

Off-spinner Mohammad Nabi produced great individual performances with the ball at the ICC T20 World Cup 2016 and topped the wicket-takers list with 12 scalps, one more than countrymate Rashid Khan. Though Afghanistan could not go beyond the group stages, Nabi’s bowling was a bright spark for Afghanistan in what was otherwise a disappointing campaign.

ICC T20 World Cup 2021: Wanindu Hasaranga

Sri Lankan leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga showcased exemplary bowling skills to finish the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 as the highest wicket-taker with a haul of 16 wickets with a best of 3/20 against South Africa in the Super 12 stage. Though Sri Lanka failed to reach the knockout stages of the competition, the leggie's bowling was a massive boost to a bowling unit that lacked confidence and execution.

ICC T20 World Cup 2022: Wanindu Hasaranga

Wanindu Hasaranga once again ended with most wickets in the 2022 edition of the T20 World Cup in Australia. Sri Lankan star leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga scalped 15 wickets in eight matches at an average of 13.26 and an economy of 6.41. His best bowling figures of 4-0-8-3 at the marquee T20 tournament came against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in a First Round Group A encounter in Geelong in October 2022.

Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium is a cricket stadium located in the port city of Chattogram, in south-eastern Bangladesh.

Previously known as Bir Shrestha Shahid Ruhul Amin Stadium, the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium was granted full international status in January 2006.

The Chattogram cricket stadium is named after Zahur Ahmad Chowdhury, who was a Bangladesh Awami League politician and a former Minister of Health and Family Welfare.

Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium staged its first international cricket match, a Test played between hosts Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in February 2006. Led by Mahela Jayawardene, Sri Lanka won the Chattogram Test by eight wickets.

It later hosted its first One-Day International (ODI) that also featured Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in the same multi-format series later in March. Sri Lanka won the game by 78 runs.

In February 2014, Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium later staged its first T20 international. Sri Lanka pipped Bangladesh by just two runs in that game.

It is the home ground of the Bangladesh cricket team and the Chattogram Challengers, the local franchise in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

With a seating capacity of 22,000, the venue also hosted 15 matches in the ICC World T20 tournament in 2014.

Let’s have a closer look at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium T20I records and stats.

Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim hold the record for the highest partnership in Bangladesh vs New Zealand Tests. During the first Test of Bangladesh’s tour of New Zealand in Wellington in 2017, Shakib and Mushfiqur forged a 359-run partnership for the fifth wicket to help the visitors post 595/8d in their first innings. Shakib slammed 217, while Mushfiqur scored 159. The incredible partnership though went in vain as New Zealand won the Test by seven wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

Scoring a hundred in Ond Day Internationals is no mean feat, which is why scoring it in record time for your country makes such an achievement even more remarkable.

Wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim holds the record for scoring the fastest ODI century for Bangladesh.

The record fastest for the fastest ODI hundred overall is held by legendary South African AB de Villiers. Rahim’s fastest ODI century for Bangladesh came after 29 more deliveries than de Villiers?fastest ODI ton, but it was a knock that truly lit up the stadium and entertained the spectators.

Rahim, in fact, features twice in Bangladesh’s top list of fastest ODI century for the country. His 77-ball 106 against Pakistan in the first match of the Men in Green’s tour to Bangladesh in 2015 is fourth on the list of fastest ODI century for Bangladesh.

Only all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan with three appearances features more than the wicketkeeper-batter in this list, while batter Litton Das like Rahim has two mentions in the top 10.

Mushfiqur Rahim’s 60-ball 100* against Ireland, March 2023

Wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim smashed the fastest ODI century for Bangladesh against Ireland in March 2023. After being asked to bat first at the toss, Rahim walked into the crease in the 34th over with the score reading 190/4 and then produced a breathtaking knock of 100 not out off 60 balls to help the Tigers to 349/6 - Bangladesh’s highest total in ODIs. He smashed 14 fours and two maximums but, unfortunately for Bangladesh, they couldn’t win the match thanks to rain playing spoilsport.

Shakib Al Hasan’s 64-ball 104 against Zimbabwe, August 2009

In the second ODI of Zimbabwe’s five-match series against Bangladesh in 2009, Shakib Al Hasan hit the second-fastest ODI hundred for his country. Asked to bat first at Queens Sports Club Bulawayo, Shakib Al Hasan took control of the match with a blitzkrieg inning of 104 from 64 balls to help his team to a total of 320/8. The Tigers went on to win the match by 49 runs and Shakib Al Hasan won the Player of the Match courtesy of his century which featured nine fours and four sixes.

Shakib Al Hasan’s 69-ball 105* against Zimbabwe, October 2009

After already tormenting Zimbabwe in their own backyard earlier in the year, Shakib Al Hasan was at it again against the Chevrons in October. However, on this occasion, the all-rounder was smashing Zimbabwe around the ground at home in Mirpur. Chasing a target of 220 to win the second game of a five-match series, Shakib Al Hasan was in a hurry as he powered to another quick ton. He scored an unbeaten 105 off 69 balls, including 15 fours and three sixes as Bangladesh won convincingly with seven wickets and over 20 overs to spare.

The art of picking wickets in a batter-dominant format like T20 cricket is extremely valuable and over the last eight seasons of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), we have witnessed some noteworthy contributions from bowlers who helped their teams achieve glory.

Shakib Al Hasan, who has represented multiple franchises over the years, has the most wickets in Bangladesh Premier League history. The left-arm spinner is also the first bowler to complete 100 wickets in the BPL.

He finished as the leading wicket-taker twice, in 2017 (22 wickets) and 2018 (23 wickets) and won the Player of the Tournament award four times, more than any other player in BPL history.

Though trailing Shakib, Rubel Hossain had a pretty good outing in this tournament over the years. Representing franchises from Dhaka, Rangpur, Sylhet and Chittagong, the player has constantly been among wickets, also finishing as the leading wicket-taker in the 2019-20 edition (20 wickets).

Former Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza too continues to impress in the tournament. The veteran has represented multiple franchises since the inception of the tournament in 2012, and won it with three different franchises - Dhaka Gladiators (2012 and 2013), Comilla Victorians (2015) and Rangpur Riders (2017).

Taskin Ahmed is one of the best wicket-takers in the tournament and has maintained a bowling average under 15. Having represented Chittagong from 2012 to 2017, he switched later to Sylhet Sixers and currently plays for the Rangpur Riders.

His international teammate Mustafizur Rahman also is consistently among the wickets in BPL and is widely considered as one of the best T20 bowlers in the world.

Among overseas cricketers, Thisara Perera is the leading wicket-taker in the tournament. Currently plying his trade with the Sylhet Strikers, he also represented Barisal Bulls, Comilla Victorians, Dhaka Platoon, Khulna Tigers and Rangpur Riders over the years.

Here’s a look at the leading wicket-takers in Bangladesh’s premier domestic T20 tournament.
