In T20 cricket the main emphasis is on scoring runs quickly rather than individual batters getting high scores. As a result, batters try to maximise their hitting prowess, even though their stay at the crease might be short. 

In this way, teams can put huge totals on board as a collective effort of all the batters. The chances of more batters playing cameos compared to individual batters making high scores are higher.

Sanju Samson | 3 hundreds

Indian wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson leads the list of batters with the most hundreds in T20Is in a calendar year with three centuries in 2024.

Samson started his scoring spree with a 40-ball century against Bangladesh in the final T20I of a three-match series against Bangladesh in Hyderabad. He smashed 11 fours and eight sixes in his 47-ball 111 which powered India to their highest total in T20Is and also to a 133-run win.

Samson backed it up with another century against South Africa in his next game in Durban to become the first Indian batter to score consecutive hundreds in T20Is. He hit 10 sixes and seven fours in his 50-ball 107 to help the visitors win by 61 runs.

Samson created history in Johannesburg by becoming the only batter to score three centuries in T20Is in a calendar year. He remained unbeaten on 109 from 56 balls in the final T20I against the Proteas hitting nine sixes and six fours to help India win the match by a massive 135 runs. 

Tilak Varma | 2 hundreds

Tilak Varma became the second Indian batter after Samson to record consecutive T20I centuries during a four-match series against South Africa in 2024.

Batting at number three, Tilak smashed an unbeaten 107 off 56 balls including seven sixes and eight fours in the third T20I against the Proteas in Centurion. His knock helped India past the 200-run mark and set up a thrilling 11-run win over the home side.

In his very next match, Tilak once again notched an unbeaten 120, this time off just 47 balls, smashing 10 sixes and nine fours. His unbroken 210-run association for the second wicket with fellow centurion Samson helped India post a gargantuan 283/1  and the visitors pocketed the four-match series 3-1 with a 135-run win.

Suryakumar Yadav | 2 Hundreds

Suryakumar Yadav owns the rare feat of notching up more than one hundred in a calendar year on multiple occasions. He first achieved it in 2022 before going on to repeat the feat the next year, in 2023.

Both of Suryakumar’s hundreds in 2022 came outside India, the first against England in Nottingham and the next against New Zealand in Mount Maunganui. He capped a dream year in T20Is amassing 1164 runs from 31 innings at an impressive average of 46.56 and a strike rate of 187.43.

In the next year, Suryakumar scored hundreds against Sri Lanka and South Africa showing remarkable consistency to accumulate 733 runs at an average of 48.86 and hitting at 155.95.

Rohit Sharma | 5 hundreds

Indian batter and T20 World Cup-winning captain Rohit Sharma, with five hundreds, leads the list of Indian players with most centuries in T20 internationals. Rohit has amassed 4231 runs, the most by any player, from 159 T20Is at an average of 32.05 and a strike rate of 140.89.

Rohit scored his first T20I century against South Africa in the first T20I of a three-match series in Dharamsala in October 2015. The opener hit 12 fours and five sixes to top-score in the contest with a 66-ball 106 but India lost the game by seven wickets.

Rohit also holds the record for the fastest T20I hundred by an Indian player with his second century coming against Sri Lanka in just 35 balls. He smashed 10 sixes, the joint-most by an Indian player in a T20I, and 12 fours in his 43-ball 118 to give India an 88-run win over the Lankans at Indore in December 2017.

Rohit’s other three T20I centuries came against England, West Indies and Afghanistan.

Suryakumar Yadav | 4 hundreds

Suryakumar Yadav is next on the list of Indian players with the most T20I centuries with a tally of four hundreds from 72 innings. 

Suryakumar scored his maiden T20I ton against England in the third T20I of a three-match T20I series in Nottingham in July 2022. Chasing 216, he kept India in the chase till the penultimate over when he got dismissed for a 55-ball 117. His knock included 14 fours and six sixes but India fell short by 17 runs in the game.

Suryakumar’s fastest T20I hundred came against Sri Lanka in January 2023 when he reached the three-figure mark in just 45 balls. His unbeaten 112 off 51 balls included nine sixes and seven fours and powered India to a 91-run win over the Lankans.

His other T20I centuries came against New Zealand and South Africa in Mount Maunganui and Johannesburg, respectively.

Sanju Samson | 3 Hundreds

Sanju Samson is next on the list with three T20I centuries for India from 33 innings. He scored his first T20I century against Bangladesh in the final T20I of a three-match series in Hyderabad in October 2024.

Samson’s 40-ball hundred was the second-fastest T20I hundred by an Indian batter behind Rohit Sharma. He smashed eight sixes and 11 fours in his 47-ball 111 to power India to 297/6, their highest aggregate in T20Is. The hosts thrashed Bangladesh by 133 runs in the contest.

Samson recorded his second T20I ton when he smashed a 50-ball 107 against South Africa in the first game of a four-match series in Durban on November 8th, 2024. 

Batting first, Samson hit 10 sixes, the joint-most by an Indian batter in a T20I innings, and seven fours to power India to 202/8 as India won the contest by 61 runs. 

Samson latter recorded his third T20I for India after hammered an unbeaten 109 off just 56 balls in the fourth and final T20I against South Africa at The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg in November 2024. His magnificent knock was laced with six fours and nine sixes.

KL Rahul | 2 Hundreds

KL Rahul has also hit two centuries for India from 68 innings. His first T20I hundred came in his fourth match against West Indies in Lauderhill in August 2016. 

Chasing a mammoth 246, Rahul, who came in at number four, scored an unbeaten 110 off 51 balls to take India to the verge of a historic win. In the end, his knock, which included 12 fours and five sixes, was not enough as India suffered a narrow one-run defeat.

His second hundred came against England in Manchester in July 2018 as India won the contest by eight wickets. Rahul remained unbeaten in both his century knocks.

The likes of Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Abhishek Sharma, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Deepak Hooda are the other centurions for India in T20Is with one hundred each to their name.

Sanju Samson once again failed to make the cut in the Indian cricket team’s playing XI against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2024 Group A match at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on Sunday, June 9.

Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, Team India named an unchanged playing XI that secured an eight-wicket win over Ireland in their T20 World Cup 2024 opener at the same venue in New York.

Apart from Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal were made to sit on the bench against Pakistan. 

Sanju Samson last featured for the Indian cricket team in their T20 World Cup 2024 warm-up fixture against Bangladesh. 

Samson opened the innings in the absence of Virat Kohli in the warm-up encounter.

However, Samson later failed to impress as he scored only one run off six deliveries. He was trapped in front of the stumps by left-arm pacer Shoriful Islam.

Samson was one of the standout batters in the recently-concluded Indian T20 League 2024. The Rajasthan captain amassed 531 runs in 16 matches at an average of 48.27 and a strike rate of 153.46. He slammed five fifties in the tournament.

The Indian cricket team has continued to back Rishabh Pant over Sanju Samson as their first-choice wicketkeeper-batter in the ongoing T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the United States.

Rishabh Pant has been given the responsibility of batting at No.3 as captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli continue to open in the marquee ICC T20 tournament.

Additionally, all-rounders Shivam Dube and Axar Patel have been preferred over Sanju Samson in the middle-order.

Former India wicketkeeper and ex-selector Saba Karim has said that Sanju Samson will play for the Indian cricket team at the T20 World Cup if Team India feels they need a batter at No.3 or if they opt to play an extra batter.

“They (Samson and Pant) play a different role altogether, so I don’t think there’s any competition between the two of them. Samson will get into the XI if the Indian team feels that it needs a batter at No.3, which means that Virat Kohli will open the innings," Saba Karim was quoted as saying to the Times of India.

“So, if the team management wants to play an additional top-order batter, then Samson will get in. Rishabh comes in lower down the order, at No 4 or No 5. It all depends on the needs of the team,�he added.

Going by the team combination, Samson can only find a place in the Indian playing XI at the ongoing T20 World Cup incase of an injury or if any other batter struggles with their recent form.

After securing an impressive 1-0 win in the three-match unofficial Test series, India A will host New Zealand A in a three-match unofficial ODI series starting on Thursday, September 22.

India’s wicket-keeper batter Sanju Samson has been appointed the captain of the 16-man ODI squad. The Kerala-born cricketer earlier failed to make the cut for India’s senior squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 scheduled to be held in Australia in October-November. 

India internationals Prithvi Shaw and Ruturaj Gaikwad are some of the big names included in the batting department. Meanwhile, Shardul Thakur, Umran Malik and Kuldeep Yadav are added to bolster the bowling attack.

India’s 2022 U-19 World Cup star Raj Angad Bawa has received his maiden India-A call-up following his impressive showing in the marquee youth tournament. Raj Angad Bawa amassed 252 runs and claimed nine wickets in five matches in the recent U-19 World Cup.

Meanwhile, New Zealand A will be led by Tom Bruce. The visitors will look to bounce back after suffering a 0-1 defeat in the three-match unofficial Test series against the Priyank Panchal-led hosts.
