The third day of the first India vs Australia day-night Test match at the Adelaide Oval witnessed India’s lowest score in Test history on Saturday.

Led by Virat Kohli, the Indian cricket team was bundled out for just 36 in their second innings of the pink-ball Test match. It eclipsed its previous lowest Test score of 42 against Mike Denness's England at the Lord's in 1974.

India posted 36/9, after Mohammed Shami became the last batsman to depart retired hurt, to record their lowest total in Test cricket. They had started the day at 9/1 with the out-of-form Prithvi Shaw back in the pavilion.

Pacer Josh Hazlewood was the chief destructor with enviable figures of 5/8 in just five overs. Pat Cummins picked up the remaining four wickets.

Opener Mayank Agarwal was the top-scorer with nine to his tally as no batsman reached the double-figure mark. Hanuma Vihari was the next best with eight runs. Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ravichandran Ashwin recorded ducks in the innings.

It’s the joint fifth-lowest total in Test match cricket, the lowest score by an Asian team and the joint-lowest score in Australia, matching South Africa’s tally from 1932.

Here’s a look at some of the Indian cricket team’s other low totals:

42 vs England in 1974

One of India’s worst batting displays came at the Lords when they toured England under Ajit Wadekar in 1974. Having won the toss, the hosts elected to bat first and had managed to post a massive 629 in their first innings. In reply, India managed 302 in their first innings and followed-on. In the second innings, India collapsed as they were bundled out for just 42 in 17 overs. Chris Old picked up five wickets and Geoff Arnold four with Eknath Solkar top-scoring with an unbeaten 18 off just 17 balls. The visitors lost the Test match by an innings and 285 runs.

46 vs New Zealand in 2024

The Indian cricket team was bundled out for 46 against New Zealand in the first innings of the first Test at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru in October 2024. Electing to bat first, India lost wickets at regular intervals to record their lowest Test total at home. Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant top-scored for India with 20 while Yashasvi Jaiswal (13) was the only other batter to reach double figures. For New Zealand, Matt Henry was the wrecker-in-chief as he bagged a five-wicket haul while fast bowler William ORourke picked up four wickets.

58 vs Australia in 1947

The Lala Amarnath-led Indian cricket team had a nightmare of a Test series when they visited Australia in 1947. In the first of the five-match series in Brisbane, India suffered a dramatic batting collapse in their first innings as they were bowled out for 58 in reply to Australia’s 382/8. Ernie Toshack picked up an astonishing 5/2 in just 2.3 overs. Team India succumbed to a humiliating defeat as they were again bundled out for 98 in their second innings with Ernie Toshack picking up 6/29, thus recording his best bowling figures in an innings and a match. Australia won the Brisbane Test by an innings and 226 runs.

58 vs England in 1952

India were bowled out for 58 and 82 against England on the same day at the Old Trafford in the third Test of the four-match series in 1952. England fast bowler Fred Trueman was the wrecker-in-chief for the hosts claiming 8/31 -- his career-best bowling figures in Tests -- in India’s first innings. Vijay Manjrekar top-scored with 22. England had won the toss and elected to bat first. Captain Sir Len Hutton had scored a scintillating hundred to help the hosts post 347/9 in their first innings. Led by Vijay Hazare, the Indian cricket team suffered an embarrassing defeat as they lost the Manchester Test match by an innings and 207 runs.

66 vs South Africa in 1996

The Sachin Tendulkar-led Team India had registered their fifth-lowest Test total against South Africa in 1996. India had won the toss and elected to field in their first Test match of the three-match series in Durban. Venkatesh Prasad’s fifer had helped restrict South Africa to 235 in their first innings. In reply, India were bundled out for 100 thanks to Allan Donald’s incredible bowling display (5/40). South Africa posted another 259 runs in their second innings to set up a run chase of 394 runs for the visitors. However, India failed miserably as they were bowled out for just 66 runs in 35 overs. Allan Donald’s nine wickets helped South Africa secure a mammoth 328 runs victory in the first Test match. Rahul Dravid top-scored in the second innings with 27 not out.

67 vs Australia in 1948

The Australian cricket team had bundled India for just 67 runs in their second innings of the fifth Test match in Melbourne in 1948. Deciding to bat first, Australia rode on Neil Harvey’s (153) century to post 575/8 in their first innings. Team India showed determination in their reply to manage 331 runs courtesy a hundred by Vinoo Mankad. However, India suffered a dramatic batting collapse in their second innings as they were bowled out for 67 runs. Len Johnson and Doug Ring each picked up three wickets. As a result, captain Don Bradman led his side to victory in the Melbourne Test by an innings and 177 runs and thrashed the visitors 4-0 in the Test series.

Jammu and Kashmir cricketer Umran Malik is the fastest Indian bowler in world cricket.

While playing for Hyderabad in the Indian T20 League, Umran Malik bowled the fastest ball by an Indian bowler at 157kph against Delhi at the Brabourne Stadium on May 5, 2022.

Malik has consistently broken the 150kph barrier after recording speeds of 153.3kph,153.1kph, 153kph, 152.9kph, 152.6kph, 152.4kph, 152.3kph and 152kph during the 2022 edition of the Indian T20 League.

Malik has also bowled the fifth-fastest ball (154kph) in the Indian T20 League, overtaking New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson who clocked 153.9kph. The list is spearheaded by former Australia fast bowler Shaun Tait who had recorded a 157.71kph delivery in 2011.

Delhi pacer Mayank Yadav features second on the list of fastest Indian bowlers. Representing Team Lucknow, Yadav made his Indian T20 League debut against Team Lucknow in 2024. He recorded a 155.8kph delivery to Punjab captain Shikhar Dhawan. Mayank later produced the fastest ball of the Indian T20 League 2024 as he clocked 156.7kph against Bengaluru at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Speedster Jasprit Bumrah is fourth on the list of fastest Indian bowlers. Bumrah clocked 153.26kph during the first Test against Australia in Adelaide in 2018. Bumrah was the wrecker-in-chief for the Indian cricket team in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy as he bagged 21 wickets in four matches at an impressive average of 17.

Navdeep Saini completes the top five list of fastest Indian bowlers in world cricket. Saini recorded a 152.85kph delivery during the 2019 edition of the Indian T20 League.

Interestingly, unofficial reports claim Javagal Srinath breached the 157kph mark during India’s tour of South Africa in 1996. However, the delivery hasn’t made it to the official list as the speed gun levels weren't as accurate.

The likes of Ishant Sharma, Varun Aaron and Umesh Yadav have also breached 152kph in international cricket.

Reverse swing in cricket is said to have originated in Pakistan and invented by former First-Class cricketer Salim Mir, who mastered the art while playing for Punjab Cricket Club in Lahore.

Mir later shared the skills with his former teammate Sarfraz Nawaz, who brought the craft of reverse swing to the international stage during the late 1970s.

Over the years, several Pakistan pacers including 1992 World Cup-winning captain Imran Khan, Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis used reverse swing to their advantage to torment opposition batters.

Apart from the Pakistan fast bowlers, pacers from other cricketing nations, the likes of Dale Steyn, Andrew Flintoff, James Anderson, Zaheer Khan, Mohammed Shami, Brett Lee, Jasprit Bumrah and Neil Wagner have acquired the expertise of reverse swing to deceive the batters.

But what is reverse swing in cricket? Here’s a closer look at the art of reverse swing, which has left plenty of batters bewildered due to the ball’s movement over the years.

What is reverse swing in cricket?

Reverse swing in cricket refers to a phenomenon when a fast bowler gets to swing the ball in an opposite direction as compared to his conventional or expected swing.

The occurrence of reverse swing only takes place when the ball is very old (at least 35-40 overs old) and has lost its shine on one side. In order to reverse swing, the players have to make sure that the one side of the ball is shiny, while the other side is rough.

If a bowler manages to master the craft of reverse swing, a natural outswinger becomes an inswinger, while an inswinger becomes an outswinger. The old ball will swing in the opposite direction towards where the shiny side is.

How to reverse swing a cricket ball?

Reverse swing is an art in cricket. It requires proper team effort to achieve the results.

Before COVID-19 pandemic, cricketers were allowed to use saliva to shine the ball. They used to spit on the ball and later rub the ball on their thighs to keep one side of the ball shiny in order to help the bowlers get some reverse swing.

However, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has imposed a permanent ban on use of saliva as a preventive measure against the spread of Coronavirus. This measure has certainly affected bowlers in achieving the desired result of reverse swing.

In order to achieve this phenomenon, the seam of the ball also needs to be presented in a certain way. The bowler needs to hold the ball with the seam pointing towards the slips, and also released with a slightly angled seam.

Additionally, in case of a dry pitch and rough outfield, there are more chances of reverse swing.

In a few previous instances, cricketers have been involved in ball tampering in order to achieve reverse swing and affect the outcome of the game. Once found guilty, these cricketers have been punished by the cricket’s world governing body.

With cricket becoming more and more competitive every passing year, players hitting milestones, big or small, have become a cause for celebration.

Mohammed Shami recently celebrated one such milestone, becoming the fastest Indian bowler to take 150 wickets in ODI cricket during the first India vs England ODI at the Kennington Oval.

Shami took 80 matches to reach the mark, handily beating Ajit Agarkar’s previous record of 97 matches which stood strong since 2002.

The Indian pacer, however, isn’t the fastest bowler to 150 ODI wickets in international cricket. The record belongs to Australian speedster Mitchell Starc, who beat Shami to the 150-wicket milestone by three matches.

Here’s a list of bowlers, not just among the Men in Blue, who have raced to the 150-wicket milestone in record time.

Mitchell Starc - 77 matches

Mitchell Starc, one of Australia’s most effective and feared pacers, holds the record of being the fastest bowler to 150 wickets. The 6 foot 4 bowler touched the 150-wicket mark in the fifty over format of the game in just 77 matches.

Starc brought up this milestone in June 2019 during the ICC World Cup in a match against the West Indies. He took five crucial wickets, including Chris Gayle, Andre Russell, Craig Brathwaite, Jason Holder, and Sheldon Cottrell, and helped Australia to an impressive 15-run win in the match.

Saqlain Mushtaq - 78 matches

Pakistani spinner Saqlain Mushtaq took just 78 matches to reach 150 ODI wickets, and held this record from 1998 to 2019 before Starc overtook him.

Mushtaq breached the 150-wicket mark in the second final of the Silver Jubilee Independence Cup between India, Bangladesh and Pakistan at Dhaka. The match was played against India, and Mushtaq finished with a haul of 3/36 in 9.5 overs. He retired with 288 ODI wickets to his kitty.

Rashid Khan - 80 matches

Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan took 80 matches to claim 150 One Day International wickets. He touched this mark in February 2022 in a match against Bangladesh at Chattogram.

Khan finished with impressive bowling figures of 10-0-37-3 in the game, claiming the wickets of Mushfiqur Rahim, Yasir Ali and Taskin Ahmed.

Mohammed Shami - 80 matches

Mohammed Shami made his way into the list in July 2022 during the first of the three ODIs of a India vs England bilateral series played in the UK.

In the game at The Oval, Shami finished with figures of 7-0-31-3, claiming the wickets of Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and Craig Overton. India won the game by 10 wickets. With this, he became the fastest Indian to 150 ODI wickets.

The Indian, however, did take the most amount of time, in terms of number of years, to reach the milestone among the top five. Shami being in and out of the national team over the years due to various reasons is the underlying cause for the delay.

Trent Boult - 81 matches

Kiwi pacer Trent Boult comes next on this list, taking 81 matches to notch up 150 ODI wickets. Like Starc, he too etched his name among the fastest to 150 ODI wickets during the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup.

Boult finished with numbers 2/44 in a game where New Zealand registered a two-wicket win against Bangladesh at The Oval during the group stage.

Hyderabad will lock horns with in-form Gujarat in another fascinating Indian T20 League 2022 encounter at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Monday, April 11.

Led by New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, Hyderabad head into the Gujarat clash after securing an eight-wicket win over reigning champions Chennai on Saturday. The 2016 Indian T20 League winners have made a disappointing start to the new season, suffering defeats against Lucknow and Rajasthan in their first two matches. The Hyderabad-based franchise are currently placed eighth in the Indian T20 League 2022 standings with two points from three matches.

Debutants Gujarat, on the other hand, have made an impressive start to their maiden Indian T20 League campaign, winning all of their three matches so far. The Hardik Pandya-led outfit is currently the only unbeaten side in the Indian T20 League 2022, having beaten Punjab, Delhi and Lucknow so far. With six points from three matches, Gujarat are currently placed second in the standings and trail table-toppers Kolkata on net run rate.

Hyderabad and Gujarat will go head-to-head for the first time in the Indian T20 League on Monday.

On that note, let’s have a look at the key player battles that could decide the outcome of the match.

Hyderabad vs Gujarat key player battles

Kane Williamson vs Mohammed Shami

India cricket team fast bowler Mohammed Shami has troubled New Zealand captain Kane Williamson in the Indian T20 League. The right-arm pacer has dismissed Williamson three times in the high-profile T20 league, while conceding just 29 runs to the Kiwi in five innings.

While Williamson has amassed 1935 runs in 66 Indian T20 League matches at an average of 38.70, Shami has picked 85 wickets in 80 matches at an economy of 8.59. The battle between Williamson and Shami will be a key contest in the upcoming Indian T20 League 2022 clash on Monday.

Nicholas Pooran vs Rashid Khan

While West Indian wicket-keeper Nicholas Pooran has been a decent performer with the bat in the Indian T20 League, former Hyderabad leg-spinner Rashid Khan has been nothing short of a revelation with the ball. Pooran has scored 645 runs in 36 Indian T20 League matches at an average of 22.24. On the other hand, Afghanistan spin sensation Rashid has bagged 98 wickets in 79 Indian T20 League matches.

Furthermore, Rashid has had an upper hand against Pooran in the Indian T20 League, giving away just eight runs in four innings that he has bowled to the West Indian. The Afghan has also dismissed Pooran once.

Rashid will be eager to produce another match-winning spell against his former side on Monday.

South Africa middle-order batsman David Miller has dominated India pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the Indian T20 League. The former Punjab batter has scored 43 runs off the 24 Bhuvneshwar Kumar deliveries he has faced in five Indian T20 League innings at an impressive strike rate of 179.16. However, the India international has managed to bag David Miller’s wicket once in the Indian T20 League.

Jasprit Bumrah’s 83 Test wickets have come at an average of 22.79. No other Indian cricket team bowler who’s played at least 20 Tests the same as Bumrah has ever managed a better average.

In just 20 Tests, Bumrah has already taken five five-fors, the same number that Mohammed Shami has in 51 Tests. In a short career, he has Test five-wicket hauls in Australia, England, South Africa and the West Indies.

However, when it comes to New Zealand, Bumrah’s numbers tell a different story. In three Tests against the Kiwis, Bumrah has taken just six wickets at an average of 41.16.

Among active Indian fast bowlers who have played at least three Tests against New Zealand, only Umesh Yadav (47.66) has a worse average. However, four of Umesh’s five Tests against the Kiwis have come in India, where conditions are usually more difficult for pacers.

All three of Bumrah’s Tests matches against New Zealand have come in bowling-friendly conditions in Wellington, Christchurch and now in Southampton, where Bumrah has gone wicketless from 26 overs in the World Test Championship (WTC) final. His fellow fast bowlers Ishant Sharma and Shami have got more out of the Hampshire Bowl pitch than he has been able to.
