Josh Hazlewood is back with Bengaluru just in time for the Indian cricket league's playoffs. The Australian fast bowler had been recovering from a shoulder injury and training at home in Brisbane. Now, he has returned to India, ready to help his team during the most important stage of the tournament.

Hazlewood did not play in the early part of the league due to a busy international schedule and fitness issues. His return to Bengaluru will help the team, which has improved as the season has progressed, climb higher.

Bengaluru's last game was against Hyderabad, which resulted in a loss. With Hazlewood’s presence, their upcoming match against Lucknow can have a significant effect. The team is looking for its first-ever title in the league.

With tough games ahead, Hazlewood’s pace and control could make a real difference. Fans are excited to see if his return can help Bengaluru go all the way this time.

The third day of the first India vs Australia day-night Test match at the Adelaide Oval witnessed India’s lowest score in Test history on Saturday.

Led by Virat Kohli, the Indian cricket team was bundled out for just 36 in their second innings of the pink-ball Test match. It eclipsed its previous lowest Test score of 42 against Mike Denness's England at the Lord's in 1974.

India posted 36/9, after Mohammed Shami became the last batsman to depart retired hurt, to record their lowest total in Test cricket. They had started the day at 9/1 with the out-of-form Prithvi Shaw back in the pavilion.

Pacer Josh Hazlewood was the chief destructor with enviable figures of 5/8 in just five overs. Pat Cummins picked up the remaining four wickets.

Opener Mayank Agarwal was the top-scorer with nine to his tally as no batsman reached the double-figure mark. Hanuma Vihari was the next best with eight runs. Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ravichandran Ashwin recorded ducks in the innings.

It’s the joint fifth-lowest total in Test match cricket, the lowest score by an Asian team and the joint-lowest score in Australia, matching South Africa’s tally from 1932.

Here’s a look at some of the Indian cricket team’s other low totals:

42 vs England in 1974

One of India’s worst batting displays came at the Lords when they toured England under Ajit Wadekar in 1974. Having won the toss, the hosts elected to bat first and had managed to post a massive 629 in their first innings. In reply, India managed 302 in their first innings and followed-on. In the second innings, India collapsed as they were bundled out for just 42 in 17 overs. Chris Old picked up five wickets and Geoff Arnold four with Eknath Solkar top-scoring with an unbeaten 18 off just 17 balls. The visitors lost the Test match by an innings and 285 runs.

46 vs New Zealand in 2024

The Indian cricket team was bundled out for 46 against New Zealand in the first innings of the first Test at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru in October 2024. Electing to bat first, India lost wickets at regular intervals to record their lowest Test total at home. Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant top-scored for India with 20 while Yashasvi Jaiswal (13) was the only other batter to reach double figures. For New Zealand, Matt Henry was the wrecker-in-chief as he bagged a five-wicket haul while fast bowler William ORourke picked up four wickets.

58 vs Australia in 1947

The Lala Amarnath-led Indian cricket team had a nightmare of a Test series when they visited Australia in 1947. In the first of the five-match series in Brisbane, India suffered a dramatic batting collapse in their first innings as they were bowled out for 58 in reply to Australia’s 382/8. Ernie Toshack picked up an astonishing 5/2 in just 2.3 overs. Team India succumbed to a humiliating defeat as they were again bundled out for 98 in their second innings with Ernie Toshack picking up 6/29, thus recording his best bowling figures in an innings and a match. Australia won the Brisbane Test by an innings and 226 runs.

58 vs England in 1952

India were bowled out for 58 and 82 against England on the same day at the Old Trafford in the third Test of the four-match series in 1952. England fast bowler Fred Trueman was the wrecker-in-chief for the hosts claiming 8/31 -- his career-best bowling figures in Tests -- in India’s first innings. Vijay Manjrekar top-scored with 22. England had won the toss and elected to bat first. Captain Sir Len Hutton had scored a scintillating hundred to help the hosts post 347/9 in their first innings. Led by Vijay Hazare, the Indian cricket team suffered an embarrassing defeat as they lost the Manchester Test match by an innings and 207 runs.

66 vs South Africa in 1996

The Sachin Tendulkar-led Team India had registered their fifth-lowest Test total against South Africa in 1996. India had won the toss and elected to field in their first Test match of the three-match series in Durban. Venkatesh Prasad’s fifer had helped restrict South Africa to 235 in their first innings. In reply, India were bundled out for 100 thanks to Allan Donald’s incredible bowling display (5/40). South Africa posted another 259 runs in their second innings to set up a run chase of 394 runs for the visitors. However, India failed miserably as they were bowled out for just 66 runs in 35 overs. Allan Donald’s nine wickets helped South Africa secure a mammoth 328 runs victory in the first Test match. Rahul Dravid top-scored in the second innings with 27 not out.

67 vs Australia in 1948

The Australian cricket team had bundled India for just 67 runs in their second innings of the fifth Test match in Melbourne in 1948. Deciding to bat first, Australia rode on Neil Harvey’s (153) century to post 575/8 in their first innings. Team India showed determination in their reply to manage 331 runs courtesy a hundred by Vinoo Mankad. However, India suffered a dramatic batting collapse in their second innings as they were bowled out for 67 runs. Len Johnson and Doug Ring each picked up three wickets. As a result, captain Don Bradman led his side to victory in the Melbourne Test by an innings and 177 runs and thrashed the visitors 4-0 in the Test series.

The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is an iconic sporting venue located in Yarra Park, Melbourne, the largest city in the Australian state of Victoria.

Locally known as the “The G? the MCG was established in 1853 and is officially the largest stadium in the Southern Hemisphere with a seating capacity of nearly 1,00,000 including standing room.

The cricket ground is situated adjacent to the Melbourne Park and is part of the Melbourne Sports and Entertainment.

The MCG hosted its first international cricket match, a Test between arch-rivals Australia and England, in March 1877. Since then, the venue has staged 114 Tests, 151 ODIs and 15 T20Is. It has also served as the centrepiece stadium of the 1956 Summer Olympics, the 2006 Commonwealth Games and two 50-over Cricket World Cups in 1992 and 2015. It has also been used as the principal venue for the Australian Football League (AFL) matches including the AFL final.

The historic venue is also set to host the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 matches including the highly-anticipated Australia-England and India-Pakistan fixtures as well as the final scheduled to be played on November 13.

The Australian cricket team has a decent T20I record at the MCG, winning nine of the 15 T20Is that they have played so far. The Aussies have lost five T20Is while one match ended in no result.

Ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, let’s have a look at the T20I records at the iconic MCG.

Melbourne Cricket Ground T20I records and stats

Highest total: The Indian cricket team’s 186/5 against Zimbabwe is the highest team total at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in the T20I format. During ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022, the Indians rode on Suryakumar Yadav's 61 off 25 balls and KL Rahul’s 35-ball 51 to post a highly competitive total on the board. In reply, Zimbabwe could only manage 115 runs in 17.2 overs as India secured a clinical 71-run victory.

Lowest total: India’s 74 all out against Australia is the lowest T20I total at this venue. During the only T20I of India’s tour of Australia in 2008, India were bundled out for 74 in 17.3 overs. Nathan Bracken was the wrecker-in-chief for Australia as he picked three wickets for 11 runs in his 2.3 overs. For India, Irfan Pathan top-scored with 26 off 30 balls. In response, Australia chased down the target in 11.2 overs and claimed a dominating nine-wicket win.

Highest individual score: Australia’s David Warner has registered the highest individual T20I score at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The swashbuckling southpaw smashed 89 runs off just 43 balls against South Africa in a T20I encounter in 2009. Warner’s blitzkrieg was laced with seven fours and six maximums.

Best bowling figures: Australia fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has the best bowling figures at this ground in T20I cricket. The right-arm pacer claimed four wickets for 30 runs in his quota of four overs against arch-rivals England in a T20I fixture in January 2014. Hazlewood’s match-winning spell restricted England to 130/9 in their 20 overs. Hosts Australia rode on unbeaten fifties from Cameron White (58) and captain George Bailey (60) to chase down the total in 14.5 overs and eight wickets in hand.

Most runs: Australia’s Aaron Finch has amassed the most runs at this venue in the T20I format. Between 2011 and 2022, Finch has scored 334 runs in 12 matches at an average of 37.11 and a strike rate of 143.34. He has hit two fifties at MCG in T20I cricket so far. Finch’s long-time opening partner David Warner is second on the list with 217 runs in seven matches.

Most wickets: Kane Richardson of Australia has picked the most wickets at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in T20 internationals. The right-arm fast bowler has bagged nine wickets in just four matches at an economy of 8.29 and an average of 14.44. India's Hardik Pandya features second on the list with six wickets in three matches.

Highest partnership: Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya hold the record for the highest partnership at the MCG in T20Is. The Indian duo forged an impressive 113-run stand for the fifth wicket against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2022. The scintillating partnership powered India to a final-over victory against Pakistan in the Super 12s.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar currently holds the record for the most T20I wickets in powerplay overs.

In T20 cricket, the first six overs of an innings are the powerplay overs, where only two fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle. Bowlers have the most difficulty during these six overs as batters usually score the majority of their runs with the help of fours and sixes.

However, there have been a few bowlers who have excelled in not only containing the flow of runs in the powerplay overs but also picked up plenty of wickets.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar's dismissal of opposing captain Andrew Balbirnie in the first Ireland vs India T20I saw him go past former West Indies bowler Samuel Badree and New Zealand star Tim Southee, who have 33 T20I wickets in the powerplay overs.

His 34 T20I wickets in 134 powerplay overs have come in 62 innings, at an economy rate of 5.53.

While Trinidad and Tobago-born leg-spinner Samuel Badree picked 33 T20I wickets in the 121 powerplay overs that he bowled in 50 innings, Kiwi fast bowler Tim Southee has bagged 33 wickets in 68 T20I innings, bowling a total of 129 powerplay overs.

Having made his T20I debut against New Zealand in 2012, Badree has scalped 56 wickets in the 52 T20I matches that he played.

On the other hand, Southee has claimed 111 T20I wickets in 92 matches since making his T20I debut against England in 2008.

Bangladesh star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan features fourth on the list of most T20I wickets in powerplay overs.

The left-arm spinner has picked 27 T20I wickets in the 83 powerplay overs that he has bowled in 58 innings. Having made his T20I debut against Zimbabwe in 2006, Shakib has claimed 119 T20I wickets in 96 matches that he has played so far.

Australia fast bowler Josh Hazlewood, Mustafizur Rahman of Bangladesh and Australia’s Mitchell Starc are next on the list with 26 T20I wickets each in the powerplay overs.

Hazlewood has bagged 26 wickets in 30 T20I innings, having bowled a total of 69 overs in the powerplay. On the other hand, Mustafizur has taken the same number of wickets in the 78 overs that he bowled in 56 innings. Starc has taken 51 inningsand 99 powerplay overs to reach the mark.

Most T20I wickets in powerplay overs

Bowler Innings Overs Wickets
Bhuvneshwar Kumar (India) 62 134.0 34
Samuel Badree (West Indies) 58 121.0 33
Tim Southee (New Zealand) 68 129.0 33

Team Chennai have signed Australian fast bowler Jason Behrendorff as a replacement for Josh Hazlewood for the 14th edition of the Indian T20 League.

The 30-year-old fast bowler, who last featured in the T20 extravaganza for Mumbai in 2019, is a like-for-like replacement for his compatriot Hazlewood, who withdrew from the tournament to stay in shape for Australia’s upcoming cricket calendar.

Hazlewood featured in three games for MS Dhoni’s men in the Indian T20 League last season, which was staged in the UAE, and had picked up just one wicket.

Jason Behrendorff has played seven T20Is for Australia so far, and has seven wickets at an economy rate of 7.31. Similarly, his career figures in the Indian T20 League read as five wickets in five games at an economy rate of 8.68.

Hazlewood became the third Australian player, after Bangalore’s Josh Philippe and Hyderabad’s Mitchell Marsh, to withdraw from the cash-rich T20 league.

Chennai begin their 2021 campaign against Delhi at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday, April 10. To get insights and key stats for the fixture, click here.

With India playing exceptionally well in Sydney to keep the series alive at 1-1, the fourth and the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy could be another thriller. Much has been said about the game in Brisbane, but the Gabba is set to host the two nations as per the initial schedule.

The Indian cricket team, unlike their counterparts, have been struggling with injuries of late, with the recent entrant being their No.6 batsman, Hanuma Vihari. The right-handed batsman picked up a hamstring injury during the long chase in Sydney, and it will be interesting to see how the Ajinkya Rahane-led team will approach the final fixture.

With the series now stuck in a do-or-die situation, I, for one, will be keeping a keen eye on the following players, who could make a potential difference.

Shubman Gill

Indian opener Shubman Gill has repaid the faith entrusted in him in absolute style, tallying 161 runs in his first two Test matches. Pairing alongside Rohit Sharma, the 21-year-old scripted history in the third Test. After a 70-run opening stand in the first innings, the pair forged a 71-run opening partnership in the second as well, to give India a strong start in Sydney. With this, the pair became only the second-ever Indian openers, since 1967-68, to score 50-plus runs for the first wicket in both innings against Australia.

Needless to say, Gill has defied his age by showing sheer composure and the way he has taken on the Australian bowling charge has been simply commendable.

Marnus Labuschagne

Marnus Labuschagne plays to enjoy and there have been only a handful of instances where he has crumbled under pressure. Right from emulating Steve Smith to accumulating important runs for his team, I’ve rightly enjoyed what he brings to this Australian team.

He was at his usual best in the third Test as well, and I expect more of the same in Gabba where both the teams will go for the money. With the Australian openers struggling with consistency, the onus will once again be on Labuschagne to provide stability in the middle-order, and I think he’s the perfect man for the job.

Cheteshwar Pujara

Judging by his own standards, Cheteshwar Pujara has had rather quiet outings thus far, but we just cannot take away his contribution in the third Test. With the team kneeling for a draw, Pujara played 205 balls in the second innings, which was just more than 34 overs.

In the entire third Test in Sydney, the top-order batsman played a whopping 381 balls (63.3 overs), which was arguably an important contribution in forcing a draw. Now, he may very well have been troubled by the likes of Pat Cummins throughout the series, but I reckon he will find a way in the final Test.

Josh Hazlewood

Josh Hazlewood hasn’t had plenty of success with the ball after his match-winning spell of 5/8 in the first Test but he sure knows how to skim through India’s top-order - after having dismissed both Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill across two innings in the third Test.

Hazlewood is not only a brilliant bowler but his quick feet and quick reaction also make him a brilliant fielder. And I don’t need to remind all about his spectacular effort on Day 3 to dismiss Hanuma Vihari. With the teams locking horns for the final time, I think Hazlewood would walk with an intent of replicating his form from the first Test.

Indian cricket team registered the lowest Test score in their history as they were bundled out for 36 in their second innings against Australia at the Adelaide Oval on Saturday.

Team India's worst Test innings total before this was 42 against Mike Denness's England at Lord's in 1974.

Starting the third day of the day-night Test at 9/1, the Indian batting line-up collapsed like a pack of cards after Pat Cummins struck early to remove nightwatchman Jasprit Bumrah.

Such was the horror show that for the first time in Test history, no one scored a double-digit score in the innings.

Fans were in utter disbelief as Team India suffered a dramatic batting collapse in the first session of Day 3.

For Australia, Pat Cummins took four for 21 while Josh Hazlewood took five for eight in five overs to share the nine wickets as India innings ended at 36/9. India’s No. 11 batsman Mohammed Shami retired hurt and could not bat.

Meanwhile, the hosts need just 90 runs to win the first Test of the four-match series of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Australia pacer Josh Hazlewood has said that the absence of Virat Kohli for the remaining three Test matches is 'going to leave a big hole' in the Indian cricket team.

India succumbed to a disappointing eight-wicket defeat against Australia in only the third day of the first Test at the Adelaide Oval on Saturday. After having decided to bat first, India posted 244, and bowled Australia out for just 191, meaning that they entered the second innings with a 53-run advantage. As it turned out though, the likes of Hazlewood and Pat Cummins combined for nine wickets to bowl India out for just 36 runs, their lowest total in Test cricket.

Hazlewood, in particular, was the wrecker in chief as he picked five in as many overs while conceding a mere eight runs. Cummins, on the other hand, ended with a figure of 21/4. With a win in the bag, Australia have a 1-0 advantage in the series, but that's not the only problem for India, to say the least. The team is going to be without their captain, Kohli, for the rest of the games, and Hazlewood has said that it is going to be a massive problem for them as no other batsman can match Kohli's class.

“Getting bowled out for 36 is going to leave a few headaches here and there and their best batter (Virat) is leaving as well, it is going to leave a bit of a hole,?Hazlewood said at the post-match press conference.

"But they have got plenty of class batters on the side-lines to come in, not of Virat’s class. But in terms of the series, it is great to be one up, it is better than being one-down, as we found out last time,?he added.

Problems for India got deeper on Saturday as pacer Mohammad Shami was taken to a hospital for scans after being hit on the arm. Speaking about it, Hazlewood said,

“It is obviously a blow, we don’t know how bad it is yet, we will wait and find out how much damage has been done.

“But he (Shami) is a class bowler and he has shown in this game, so they might have to dig deep in their arsenal to cover him but we probably expect him to play.

“I am not too sure how bad it is, to be honest.?/p>

After losing the three-match ODI series 2-1, the Indian cricket team will look to make amends in the T20Is series Down Under, when they lock horns with Australia in the first T20I match on Friday.

Australia vs India Match Details

Date: December 04, 2020

Time: 01:40 PM IST

Venue: Manuka Oval, Canberra

Pitch Report

The average first innings score at the Manuka Oval in the last five T20s is 171. Only once has a team successfully chased down the total. So, the captain winning the toss would prefer batting first at this venue.

Player availability

Australia opener David Warner has been ruled out of the T20I series due to a groin injury he suffered during the second ODI, while pace spearhead Pat Cummins has been rested as part of workload management. Mitchell Starc, Ashton Agar and Marcus Stoinis are also doubtful for the first T20I.

On the other hand, India might miss out on the services of young pacer Navdeep Saini due to injury.

Australia vs India 1st T20I Predicted XI

Australia predicted XI: Matthew Wade, Aaron Finch, Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Alex Carey (wicket-keeper), Cameron Green, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Ashton Agar, Adam Zampa, Sean Abbott

India predicted XI: KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Deepak Chahar, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah, T Natarajan

Australia vs India Fantasy XI:

Wicket-keeper: KL Rahul (Vice-captain)

KL Rahul had won the Orange Cap in the recently concluded Indian T20 League season, after he amassed a staggering 670 runs in 14 games at an average of 55.83 with five fifties and one century. He is also expected to replace Rohit Sharma in the playing 11 in the shortest format of the game.

Batsmen: Aaron Finch, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli (Captain), Steve Smith

Virat Kohli and Steve Smith are undoubtedly two of the greatest players of this generation. So, it’s basically a no-brainer to have them in any fantasy 11. On the other hand, Aaron Finch and Shikhar Dhawan have been in great touch in the recently concluded ODI series. The Australian captain was the highest run-getter in the recently-concluded ODI series, accumulating 249 runs at an average of 83.

All-rounders: Hardik Pandya, Glenn Maxwell

Hardik Pandya and Glenn Maxwell were the standout performers in the recently concluded ODI series as well. While Pandya had amassed scores of 90, 28 and 92 not out in the three matches, Maxwell was at his destructive best with a couple of half-centuries to his name. These two are expected to continue their scintillating form in the upcoming T20 series Down Under.

Bowlers: Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Jasprit Bumrah

Adam Zampa and Josh Hazlewood were the main nemesis of the famed Indian batting line-up in the ODIs. The two claimed 13 wickets in total to help the Aussies clinch the ODI series 2-1. Additionally, Mitchell Starc, if fit, can be one of the biggest match-winners on his day.

For India, Jasprit Bumrah is hands down one of the best bowlers in T20s  as was evident in his recent Indian T20 League campaign, where he picked 27 wickets in just 15 matches at an average of 14.96.

The series is lost but the pride is left to be played for.

India’s performance in the ongoing Australia series has been underwhelming, to say the least, but Kohli’s men still have a game to resurrect the lost regality. I, for one, have been duly entertained by an animated batting display of the Australians, but at the same time, a confound return from India’s bowling attack has left me bewildered.

So as we near the third and the final ODI of the series, here are four players I believe will be worth keeping an eye on.

Virat Kohli

Watching Virat Kohli bat in the second ODI was a true delight really. The Indian skipper scored his 59th half-century on Sunday, his ninth against the Aussies, and then went on to complete 22,000 international runs. With no Rohit, the onus remains on him to really drive this Indian batting line-up forward.

So as he prepares for the final showdown of the series, I think he’d want to better his tally by hitting another scrumptious knock.

Aaron Finch

Aaron Finch has now scored two centuries and one half-century in his last five innings against India. The Aussie skipper has, in fact, been involved in three consecutive 100-plus runs partnerships in ODIs in Australia, and thus represents a significant threat for Virat Kohli’s men, who are yet to decode a way to dismiss the opener early in the game.

India have struggled to get a breakthrough in the Powerplay overs. Warner and Finch’s opening stand on Sunday was the fifth consecutive instance where the Indians failed to pick a wicket during that phase. It is, of course, a troublesome statistic for the Men in Blue, but for Finch, I reckon, it is a blessing in disguise.

Ravindra Jadeja

Ravindra Jadeja is yet to do the talking be it either with the ball or on the field with his fielding. The all-rounder, however, has managed to keep his economy under check. Jadeja was India’s second-best economical bowler in the first ODI and in the second, where the Aussies went all guns blazing, he went for just six runs per over.

Jadeja scored an 11-ball 24 on Sunday and I personally believe he will play an important role in the final game of the series.

Josh Hazlewood

Josh Hazlewood has been Australia’s best pacer from the lot so far. He picked three for 55 in the first game and continued his domination by picking two for 59 in the second. Unlike Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, Josh has managed to bowl perfect lines and that has rightly troubled the Indians.

Hazlewood got the better of Virat Kohli in both the ODIs and Finch would right expect a similar showing from his bowler. With Kohli leaving after the first Test, Josh would be eager to continue his good bowling against the Indian skipper while he is around. The Indian batsmen have well and truly decoded Starc and Cummin’s approach and this makes Hazlewood Australia’s trump card for the final ODI.
