For a high-paced format like T20 cricket, a bowler’s nightmare is registering the most expensive over.

While it differs from pitch to pitch, a T20 bowler should understand the mindset of the opposition batsmen before bowling his over. Otherwise, they would be at the mercy of specialist batsmen like Chris Gayle, who has the record for the fastest century in T20 cricket.

Bangalore’s Harshal Patel, who earlier made the news as the first player to take a fifer against current holders Mumbai, was hammered for 37 overs in his final over against Chennai.

After taking three wickets for just 14 runs from his three overs, skipper Virat Kohli handed the ball for Harshal to bowl the final over of the first innings. Needless to say, it was a costly mistake.

Ravindra Jadeja had no mercy on Harshal Patel as he smashed 6,6,6nb,6,2,6,4 in the 20th over. Totalling 37 runs, it was the most expensive over in T20.

With this, Harshal Patel equalled Prasanth Parameswaran’s 2011 record in the Indian T20 League who leaked 37 runs in the third over of Kerala’s game against Bangalore.

Four bowlers, meanwhile, have conceded a record 36 runs in an over in T20 internationals. Two of them saw the batsmen smashing six successive sixes.

India’s Yuvraj Singh did it first in 2007 against England, blazing six sixes off Stuart Broad’s final and the innings penultimate over during the ICC T20 World Cup in 2007. Yuvraj brought up his fifty with the last six of the over in just 12 balls and was ultimately dismissed in the last over for a 14-ball 58. The Indian cricket team posted 218/4 and beat England by 18 runs. Broad ended with 0/60 in his four overs.

Fourteen years later in 2021, Kieron Pollard smashed six sixes off Akila Dananjaya, as West Indies chased Sri Lanka’s 131/9 in just 13.1 overs and with four wickets in hand. Pollard set the tone early, blazing in the sixth over and taming Dananjaya who had picked an impressive 3/17 in two overs until then, including a hat-trick. The Sri Lankan ended with figures of 3/62 in his four overs in the end.

West Indies' Nicholas Pooran broke multiple records during a T20 World Cup 2024, Group C match against Afghanistan. In the fourth over against Azmatullah Omarzai, Pooran struck three sixes and three boundaries. A no-ball and 4 leg byes made matters worse for the Afghan all-rounder as power-hitter Pooran scored 36 runs in an over to enter an elite list of batters. The 28-year-old's fiery knock ended with 98 runs off 53 balls and helped the Windies to a win.

Shivam Dube has the unwanted record of conceding the most runs in an over by an Indian bowler when he gave away 34 runs to the New Zealand pair of Tim Seifert and Ross Taylor at Mount Maunganui in February 2020. Dube’s first ball was to Seifert and the over went 6641 and then nb466 to Taylor. It was Shivam Dube’s only over on the day. India had posted 163/3 but it proved to be enough as they won by seven runs, Dube’s generosity notwithstanding.

Team Punjab hold the record for the highest successful run chase in T20 cricket. They chased down a target of 262 against Team Kolkata during an Indian T20 League 2024 match at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

The Sam Curran-led Punjab broke the previous record held by the South African cricket team. The Proteas chased down 259 against West Indies in the second T20 international of a three-match series in March 2023.

Bulgarian National Cricket Team hold the record for the third-highest successful run chase in T20 cricket. They chased down a target of 243 against Serbia and finished with 246/4 in 19.4 overs, which is also the second highest score in the second innings of a T20 match.

In December 2016, Otago blazed away to 248/3 courtesy a 46-ball hundred by Hamish Rutherford in a Super Smash match, a domestic Twenty20 cricket competition, against Central Districts at the Pukekura Park in New Plymouth. This is the highest run chase in T20 cricket to this day, but it came in a losing cause.

The score should have been enough. Instead, Sri Lanka batsman Mahela Jayawardene smashed a 48-ball century to keep Central Districts in the hunt. But with eight needed off the final over, Neil Wagner defended the total to help Otago clinch a thriller by one run.

Central Districts scored 248/4 and set the record for the highest run chase in T20 cricket against in 2016.

Interestingly, this record-breaking 497-run match became the highest-aggregated T20 ever.

“I’m sure it’s something everyone will remember for a long time,Hamish Rutherford said after the match.

In Twenty20 Internationals, the Australian cricket team holds the record for the highest run chase in T20, which they had pulled off to win against New Zealand at Eden Park in Auckland in February 2018.

Having won the toss, New Zealand rode on a blitzkrieg hundred from opener Martin Guptill (105 off 54 balls) and a scintillating fifty by his partner Colin Munro (76 off 33) to post a mammoth total of 243/6 in their quota of 20 overs.

In reply, Australia openers David Warner and D Arcy Short slammed quick-fire fifties to set the tone of the chase. While David Warner hammered 59 runs off just 24 balls, D Arcy Short scored a 44-ball 76 to keep the Aussies in the hunt for the world-record run chase.

With Australia needing 42 from 24 balls, Glenn Maxwell (31 off 14) and Aaron Finch (36 off 14) played a blinder to pull off the highest successful run chase in T20 cricket (245/5), with seven balls to spare.

The Indian cricket team’s highest score in a run chase in T20Is is 244/4 against the West Indies in 2016. India lost the match by 1 run.  India’s highest successful run chase in T20 cricket is 211/4 vs Sri Lanka in Chandigarh in 2009, registering the win in 19.1 overs. Yuvraj Singh starred on the day with an unbeaten 60 in just 25 balls.

The MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, also known as Chepauk, has been a prominent name in cricket since the inception of the Presidency matches in 1916.

From the first-ever Ranji Trophy match being played in the venue in 1934, to India’s first Test win in 1951-52 when they defeated England, the MA Chidambaram Stadium has hosted some historic matches and seen some memorable records being created over the years.

Though Chepauk has accommodated only two T20 internationals in all these years, the iconic stadium has hosted close to 50 Indian T20 League matches already and is the fortress of the MS Dhoni-led Team Chennai.

Here's a closer look at all the 20-over records at the venue.

MA Chidambaram T20I records

Newcomers Lucknow etched their name into the record books for the highest successful run chase in the Indian T20 League, as they chased down Chennai’s target of 210 in their Indian T20 League 2022 game at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday, March 31.

Lucknow rode on the efforts of Quinton de Kock (61 runs of 45 balls) and Evin Lewis (55 runs of 23 balls) to beat Ravindra Jadeja's Chennai by six-wickets with three balls to spare.

Put to bat first, Chennai reached 100 runs in 9.1 overs, but a 60-run partnership for the fourth wicket and a six-ball 16 from MS Dhoni propelled the defending champions to 210/7.

In response, KL Rahul and Co. made a confident start with 50 runs in the powerplay before losing four wickets between overs 10 and 15.

While Evin Lewis remained unbeaten at the crease during the death overs, the West Indian batter received support from Deepak Hooda (13 runs off eight balls) and Ayush Badoni (19 runs off nine balls) to plot a score of 211/4 in 19.3 overs, at a run rate of 10.82.

Known as the ‘Mecca of Indian Cricket, the Eden Gardens is the oldest cricket stadium in the country. Built in 1864 during the British Raj, the Eden Gardens also remained the largest cricket ground in India and Asia and the second-largest ground in the world, until the new Narendra Modi Stadium was inaugurated in Motera in February 2021.

However, the Eden Gardens has a rich history. Having hosted its first Test in 1934, the venue has witnessed some iconic matches over the years, like the 1987 ICC World Cup final, the 1996 ICC World Cup semi-final, the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 final and many more.

From India’s historic Test comeback against Australia in 2001 to Carlos Brathwaite’s unparalleled solo effort against Ben Stokes in the 2016 ICC T20I World Cup final, the 66,000 capacity stadium has witnessed magical moments too.

Here, we look at the T20I and the Indian T20 League records made at this iconic venue.

Eden Gardens T20I records

Highest total: The highest total in a T20I match at the Eden Gardens is 201/5 in 20 overs by Pakistan. The Men in Green racked up the total against Bangladesh in a group stage match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2016. Pakistan won that match by 55 runs.

Lowest total: The Bangladesh cricket team has the forgettable record of scoring the lowest total at the Eden Gardens. Chasing a target of 146 runs against New Zealand in the ICC T20 World Cup 2016, the Bangla Tigers were wrapped up for just 70 runs.

Highest individual score: West Indies' Marlon Samuels boasts of the highest individual score at the Eden Gardens with an unbeaten 85 against England in the ICC T20 World Cup 2016 final. Samuels' knock helped West Indies lift their second T20 World Cup title.

Best bowling figures: Bangladesh's Mustafizur Rahman's spell of 5/22 are the best bowling figures at the Eden Gardens. The left-arm seamer's efforts though went in vain as Bangladesh were bundled out for just 70 runs in the chase of 146.

Highest partnership: West Indies' Nicholas Pooran and Rovman Powell are the players with the highest partnership in T20Is at Eden Gardens. They put on a 100-run stand for the third wicket in a match against India in February 2022. Unfortunately for the Windies, it wasn't enough for them to win the clash as they succumbed to a eight-run defeat while chasing a 187-run target.

Eden Gardens T20 records

Highest total: The highest total in a T20 match at the Eden Gardens is 235/3 in 20 overs by Uttar Pradesh in the 2017-18 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Electing to bat first against Bengal, UP lost their openers cheaply but engineered a fight-back thanks to skipper Suresh Raina. UP eventually won the match by 75 runs.

Highest individual score: Uttar Pradesh's Suresh Raina's unbeaten 59-ball 126 against Bengal is the highest individual score in a T20 match at the Eden Gardens. Raina's ton enabled UP to trounce Bengal by 75 runs.

Eden Gardens Indian T20 League records

Most runs: Gautam Gambhir's 1,407 runs in the Indian T20 League at Eden Gardens are the most runs by a player at the iconic venue. Out of his tally of 4,217 runs in the Indian T20 League, the southpaw managed to score 33 per cent of his runs at Eden Gardens alone.

Chasing a target of 132 runs against Kolkata, Bangalore was bundled out in just 9.4 overs with skipper Virat Kohli being dismissed for a golden duck.

Best bowling figures: Kolkata’s Sunil Narine holds the record of the best bowling figures at Eden Gardens in the Indian T20 League. Delhi’s famous Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium, which was renamed as Arun Jaitley Stadium after the former union minister and DDCA (Delhi & District Cricket Association) president in September 2019, was established in 1883.

However, it wasn’t until the 20th century that the iconic stadium held its first Test match. The Arun Jaitley Stadium hosted the first Test match during West Indiestour of India in the 1948-49 season with John Goddard leading the visitors.

What makes the Arun Jaitley Stadium stand out from the rest is its pitch that is both batting and bowling friendly. Over the years, the venue has seen contrasting records like Anil Kumble getting a 10-wicket haul against Pakistan and India’s Hemu Adhikari and Ghulam Ahmed forging a 109-run tenth wicket stand.

Not only records, but the Arun Jaitley Stadium has also witnessed some historic cricket moments over the years. While Sunil Gavaskar scored his 29th Test ton in 1983-84 to equal Don Bradman’s record for the most Test centuries on this ground, years later in 2005-06, Sachin Tendulkar broke Gavaskar’s Test century record with his 35th Test hundred here.

Arun Jaitley Stadium T20I Records

Highest total: The highest T20I total at the Arun Jaitley Stadium was made by India when they scored 211/4 against South Africa in 2022. Put to bat first, India rode on Ishan Kishan's 48-ball 76 and Hardik Pandya's quickfire 31 off 12 balls to help India cross 200.

Lowest total: The lowest T20I total at the Arun Jaitley Stadium is 120 all out by Sri Lanka while facing South Africa in a group match of the 2016 ICC T20I World Cup. Batting first, the Lankans were bundled out in 19.3 overs and South Africa chased down the target with 14 balls and eight wickets to spare.

Best bowling: The best bowling figures at the Arun Jaitley Stadium is Chris Jordan’s 4/28, in England’s group match against Sri Lanka at the 2016 T20 World Cup. After England batted first to set up a target of 172 runs, Sri Lanka were restricted to 161/8.

Highest partnership: The highest partnership in a T20I match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium is 158 runs forged by openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan while batting first against New Zealand in 2017. India had set up a target of 203 and the Kiwis eventually fell short by 53 runs.

Arun Jaitley Stadium Indian T20 League records

Most runs: Quite unsurprisingly, the Nawab of Najafgarh and Delhi cricketer Virender Sehwag holds the mantle of most runs scored at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in the Indian T20 League. Sehwag played for two teams - Delhi and Punjab - in his Indian T20 League career and tallied 933 runs at the iconic venue. Sehwag has played 104 Indian T20 League matches, scoring 2,728 runs.

Most wickets: Yet another local lad, Amit Mishra has been the most lethal bowler in Indian T20 League at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. The veteran spinner, who is currently playing for Delhi, has a whopping 166 wickets to his name in the tournament and 58 of his scalps have come at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Highest individual score: The highest score in the Indian T20 League at the Arun Jaitley Stadium is 128 by Chris Gayle. Playing against Delhi in 2012, the towering southpaw hit 13 sixes and seven boundaries to score 128 runs in 62 balls as Bangalore posted 215/1 runs in 20 overs. Delhi fell short by 21 runs in the end.

Best bowling figures: The best bowling figure recorded in the Indian T20 league at the Arun Jaitley Stadium is 5/13 by Mumbai’s Lasith Malinga. The speedster led the attack against Delhi in 2011 skittling them out for just 95 runs. Mumbai won the match in 17 overs and with eight wickets remaining.

Umran Malik’s fastest ball is a 157 kmph delivery that he bowled in an Indian T20 League game against Delhi on May 5, 2022.

The Jammu and Kashmir pacer, considered a bright talent for the future in the Indian national cricket team, bowled his record delivery in the final over of his spell.

This performance was an improvement on the 153.3 kmph delivery he bowled against Gujarat on April 11. Malik had also bowled a 153.1 kmph delivery against Chennai in their previous match. Bowling the first ball of his second over, Umran Malik touched the 153 mark and his delivery hit the pads of Ambati Rayudu on leg side. An appeal for LBW was made but an inside edge saw Rayudu survive at the crease.

The buzz around Umran Malik’s fastest ball in the Indian T20 League started gaining strength initially in the Indian T20 League 2021 match against Bangalore. The speedster bowled three consecutive deliveries (150 kmph, 151.9 kmph, 153 kmph) that clocked above the 150kmph mark in the ninth over of the match, and second over of his spell.

It was in this fixture that Umran Malik’s fastest ball in Indian T20 League was registered at the 153kmph mark for the first time.

Umran Malik made an impressive Indian T20 League debut in 2021, clocking the fastest ball bowled by an Indian in that edition of the tournament with a 151.09 kmph ripper. This figure beat the previous record of 145.97 kmph that was held by Mohammed Siraj.

Recently, the Hyderabad star grabbed the headlines for his four wicket-maiden against Punjab. In that very game, Malik clocked 152.6 kmph with his attempted yorker delivery at Liam Livingstone ending up to be a low full-toss.

England cricket team star Jos Buttler and India’s Virat Kohli are the batters who jointly hold the record for most centuries in a T20 series.

Buttler recently hit his fourth century of the Indian T20 League 2022 campaign and guided Rajasthan to a seven-wicket win over Bangalore in the Qualifier 2 - a win which sealed their berth in the final.

This has been the 31-year-old’s most successful season in the high-profile T20 competition since his debut in 2016.

In the 2022 edition, Jos Buttler hit his first century against Mumbai. With 11 boundaries and five sixes, the English opener reached his ton in 68 balls as he set the tone for Rajasthan’s 23-run victory.

Buttler hit back-to-back tons against Kolkata (103) and Delhi (116) and became the second player after Shikhar Dhawan (Delhi, 2020) to achieve this feat.

Following his fourth ton in Qualifier 2 against RCB, Jos Buttler matched Virat Kohli’s record of four tons in a single Indian T20 League campaign. Furthermore, the 31-year-old Rajasthan star equalled Kohli’s total of five tons in the competition. The pair is one short of Chris Gayle’s all-time record of six centuries in the Indian T20 League.

Virat Kohli was the first cricketer to hit four tons in a single Indian T20 League season in his record-breaking 2016 season.

The first of Kohli’s four tons came against the previous Gujarat franchise team. His 63-ball unbeaten 100 went in vain as his Bangalore team lost the match by six wickets.

Virat Kohli’s next three triple-figure scores were against Pune (108*), Gujarat (109) and Punjab (113). The 2016 campaign saw the Bangalore star eventually record the most runs in a single Indian T20 League season.

The third player with most centuries in a T20 series is Michael Klinger. The former Australian cricketer slammed three hundreds in the 2015 T20 Blast campaign while representing Gloucestershire.

Klinger’s first ton in the 2015 T20 Blast came against Essex. His career-best unbeaten 126 off 68 balls propelled Gloucestershire to an eventual match-winning score of 199/4.

Michael Klinger’s next high-scores would come in a losing cause against Essex (104) and Glamorgan (104).

While Buttler, Kohli and Klinger are the top three players with most centuries in a T20 series, they are followed by 11 players who have hit two tons in a T20 competition.

Among them, the most notable is Shikhar Dhawan. The Indian cricket team opener represented Delhi in the 2020 edition of the Indian T20 League and hit consecutive T20 centuries against Chennai (101*) and Punjab (106*).

Most centuries in a T20 series

Player Team Season Competition No. of centuries
Jos Buttler Rajasthan 2022 Indian T20 League 4
Virat Kohli Bangalore 2016 Indian T20 League 4
Michael Klinger Gloucestershire 2015 T20 Blast 3
Shikhar Dhawan Delhi 2020 Indian T20 League 2
KL Rahul Punjab 2022 Indian T20 League 2

Gujarat are the odds-on favourites against Rajasthan in the Indian T20 League 2022 final encounter on Sunday.

Gujarat, as debutants, have almost ticked all the boxes this term with their all-round performances and are aiming to cap a fairytale finish to the season with a win in the final. Their head-to-head against Rajasthan gives them a psychological edge as wll in the encounter.

Rajasthan, however, will be no pushovers. The 2008 champions will be playing to win the championship for the late Shane Warne and will rely on top run-getter Jos Buttler to continue his big-hitting spree on Sunday.
