Napoli’s Serie A title hopes took a hit after a 2-2 draw with Genoa on Sunday. They dropped crucial points at home, where they were expected to win.

The Italian team took the lead early in the 15th minute. Romelu Lukaku scored after a perfect pass from Scott McTominay. Genoa responded in the 32nd minute when a header from Honest Ahanor bounced off the post and into Napoli’s goal, giving them an own goal.

Napoli regained the lead in the 64th minute with a powerful shot from Giacomo Raspadori. However, Genoa’s Johan Vásquez scored a header in the 84th minute, earning them a point and ruining Napoli’s hopes of a win.

Napoli stays at the top of the league with 78 points. However, Inter, who won 2-0 against Torino, is only one point behind with two rounds remaining.

They now face a tense finish to the season, with every game becoming crucial.

Founded in 1898, Serie A is the top-tier league in Italian football. The winner of Serie A is awarded the Scudetto and the Coppa Campioni d'Italia.

Since the 1929-30 season, the Serie A has been held in a round-robin format where each club plays the other side in a home and away fixture. Before this, regional and inter-regional rounds were held to determine the winner.

The top division Italian league is considered to be the most tactical and defence-oriented league among the top five leagues in Europe.

Since 2004-05, there have been 20 Italian clubs competing in Serie A every season.

The top-four placed teams in Serie A directly qualify for the UEFA Champions League while the fifth and Coppa Italia winners qualify for the UEFA Europa League.

Meanwhile, the bottom three teams at the end of the season are relegated to Serie B. They are replaced by the top three sides from Serie B.

From 1915 to 1919, the Serie A was postponed due to the First World War while the league was once again cancelled between 1944 and 1945 due to the Second World War.

Inter Milan are the reigning champions of Serie A, having finished at the top of the 2023-24 standings. Inter pipped arch-rivals AC Milan and Juventus to clinch their 20th Serie A title.

Who won the first Serie A?

Genos won the inaugural edition of Serie A in 1898. The Red and Blues defeated Internazionale Torino 3-1 following extra-time. The first edition of Serie A was a knock-out tournament featuring just three clubs from Turin. Apart from Genoa, Foot-Ball Club Torinese and Reale Società Ginnastica di Torino were the other two teams who participated in the tournament.

Who has won the most Serie A titles?

Juventus are the most successful team in Serie A, having won the title a record 36 times. The Old Lady also hold the record for winning the most consecutive titles in Serie A. Between 2011 and 2020, Juventus won nine Serie A titles on the trot.

Juventus have already sealed their ninth Serie A title in a row, but the league's single-season scoring record could yet be broken and the battle against the drop is going down to the wire.

Here we look at five talking points before the final round of Italian top-flight games this weekend.

Immobile targets record

Ciro Immobile needs just one more goal to equal the scoring record for a single campaign as Lazio make the short journey to Napoli for their final game.

The 30-year-old forward already has 35 goals and can match Gonzalo Higuain's record of 36 goals, made playing for Napoli in the 2015-16 season.

Immobile is already basically assured of winning the European Golden Shoe for the continent's top scorer, having overtaken Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski's tally of 34 against Brescia midweek.

Lazio are fourth, but still in the running for second place, while seventh-placed Napoli have nothing to play for in the league except defending the record of their former teammate Higuain.

Gennaro Gattuso's Napoli are also warming up for their meeting with Barcelona in the Champions League last 16, return leg.

Trio race for second place

Three teams -- Inter Milan, Atalanta and Lazio -- are in the running for second place.

Inter and Atalanta will go head-to-head in Bergamo with Lazio's last game at Napoli.

Antonio Conte's Inter have 79 points, one point ahead of both Atalanta and Lazio, with the northerners ahead of the Romans, who they held 3-3 in the Stadio Olimpico and beat 3-2 at home this season.

"We're masters of our destiny, second place depends only on us," said Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini.

Atalanta are also preparing for their Champions League quarter-final clash against Paris Saint-Germain next month in Lisbon.

They could beat last season's best-ever finish of third, which gave them Champions League qualification for the first time. This season they are in stunning form, are unbeaten since January 20 and just two off the mark of 100 league goals.

Tired Juve eye U23 team

Maurizio Sarri said he might field his Under-23 team, now coached by former Italy great Andrea Pirlo, in their final game against Roma in Turin after falling to a miserable midweek defeat at Cagliari days after sealing their ninth consecutive Serie A title.

Juve are preparing for their Champions League last 16, return leg against Lyon, where they trail 1-0, and are missing key players such as Paulo Dybala and Douglas Costa through injury.

"We are the only ones in Europe who have played five games in 12 days, the league has created big problems for us," said Sarri.

However, Cristiano Ronaldo's hopes of finishing the season as top scorer look over as the 35-year-old trails Immobile by four goals.

Relegation scrap

Lecce and Genoa will face Parma and Hellas Verona respectively at the weekend hoping to avoid joining Brescia and SPAL down in Serie B.

Genoa, in 17th, are just one-point ahead of Lecce, who occupy the final relegation berth.

If both teams finish equal on points, Genoa will stay in Serie A, with Lecce heading back to the second tier after just one season in the top flight.

Ibra turning clock back at Milan

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and AC Milan take on mid-table outfit Cagliari looking to cap an impressive run since football returned to Italy from the coronavirus lockdown.

Only Manchester City with 34 goals have scored more than Milan (32) in Europe's top leagues since the restart.

Ibrahimovic, 38, has scored six times since the lockdown, including four in the last three games, with the club unbeaten in eleven Serie A matches, their best run since April 2013 (14).

The 'Rossoneri' have also scored at least two goals in six consecutive Serie A away matches, their best run since 1964 (nine).

Romelu Lukaku scored in either half as Inter Milan claimed a 3-0 win against struggling Genoa to move second in Serie A behind Juventus who can win a a ninth title in a row on Sunday.

Antonio Conte's title ambitions took a knock with back-to-back stalemates against Roma and Fiorentina.

But Inter pulled back ahead of Atalanta, and within four points of leaders Juventus, who are poised to claim a 36th 'Scudetto' when they play Sampdoria in Turin.

"The problem is how you see the glass, whether half full or half empty," said Conte of second position.

"There are vintages where you sow little and you reap a lot and others in which you sow a lot and reap little, like this one.

"But there are numbers that speak clearly, that comfort. I think these lads are doing very good things. Of course, we can and must improve.

"We won't win the league but we have to be hungry to finish as high as possible."

Lukaku nodded in Cristiano Biraghi's cross after 34 minutes in the northwestern port city, with the former Manchester United forward accelerating to finish off an individual effort three minutes into injury time.

The 27-year-old Belgian brought his tally to 23 league goals this season, and 29 in all competitions.

Alexis Sanchez, on-loan from United, was also on target with eight minutes to go, picking up a Victor Moses cross to volley in for his fourth league goal this season.

Atalanta were held 1-1 at AC Milan on Friday, with the Bergamo side due to meet Inter Milan in the final game of the season next week.

"On a personal level, I'm happy, but as a team we can do so much more," said Lukaku, who moved third behind Hungarian Istvan Nyers (26) and Brazilian Ronaldo (25) for the mosts league goals scored by an Inter player in their debut season.

"It's not easy for us to be in second place, because we want to win and go as high as possible.

"Now we want to do well in these final rounds and then the Europa League."

- Four Sassuolo goals offside -

Genoa are four points above the relegation zone with two games left this season.

In Naples, Napoli beat Sassuolo 2-0 with the visitors having four goals ruled offside -- two in either half.

Three were chalked off by VAR.

Albanian defender Elseid Hysaj opened the scoring for Napoli after eight minutes in the San Paolo Stadium.

Filip Djuricic then had two goals ruled out as did Francesco Caputo and Domenico Berardi following VAR viewings before Brazilian Allan sealed the points for the hosts three minutes into injury time.

Seventh-placed Napoli -- already through to the Europa League as a result of their Italian Cup victory -- extend their lead on pursuing Sassuolo, in eighth, to 11 points.

Mid-table Parma saw off relegated Brescia 2-1 in a win inspired by on-loan Juventus midfielder Dejan Kulusevski.

The 20-year-old Swede set up Matteo Darmian for the opener just before the hour mark before Daniele Dessena pulled the hosts level three minutes later.

A spectacular solo effort from Kulusevski sealed back-to-back wins for Parma who had struggled after the lockdown.

Juventus maintained their four-point lead at the top of Serie A on Tuesday after strolling to a 3-1 win at Genoa that keeps chasers, Lazio, at bay despite their comeback triumph at Torino.

Three stunning individual goals from Paulo Dybala, Cristiano Ronaldo and Douglas Costa downed relegation-threatened Genoa and kept Maurizio Sarri on course to deliver Juve's ninth straight league title in his first season as coach.

Andrea Pinamonti pulled one back with 14 minutes left for the struggling hosts, who stay just one point above the drop zone and third-from-bottom Lecce, who host Genoa's local rivals Sampdoria on Wednesday.

Pinamonti's strike was the first goal Juve have conceded since losing at Lyon in late February, but it wasn't enough to stop the champions from cruising to their sixth straight league win.

"It was a good team effort and we scored three brilliant goals," said Sarri.

"The team have recovered well after the disappointment of losing the Italian Cup final, it was only a matter of time."

The victory at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris showcased the firepower Sarri has at his disposal, with Genoa goalkeeper Mattia Perin making five saves in the goalless first half as Juve pushed early to win the match.

Dybala put his side in the lead in the 50th minute with a beautiful finish following a snaking dribble, a strike that set the tone for the rest of the match.

Ronaldo, who had looked off the pace following the league's restart from the coronavirus shutdown, showed that he was back to his best seven minutes later when he charged towards goal before letting off a rocket of a shot that Perin could only grasp at as it fired into the net.

That settled the result, but substitute Costa then made his own case for goal of the match when he collected the ball towards the right side of the area and unleashed a curling, dipping shot that again left Perin bewildered.

"They (Dybala and Ronaldo) have learned to look for each other more often," Sarri said of a blossoming partnership.

They have realised that by benefitting from each other, both reap the rewards. It's something I have noticed in training too."

- Immobile launches Lazio comeback -

Lazio had done their part earlier on Tuesday when they came from behind again to win 2-1 against struggling Torino.

Ciro Immobile's 29th league goal of another remarkable season for the Italy forward and Marco Parolo's deflected strike in the 73rd minute completed a deserved second-half comeback for Lazio, who had clawed their way to a 2-1 win over Fiorentina in the similar fashion just two days earlier.

Andrea Belotti gave the hosts an early lead from the penalty spot after Immobile handled but spent the rest of the match on the back foot and are 14th on 31 points.

Moreno Longo's side have lost seven of their last nine league matches and although they are six points above the drop zone could find themselves dragged into a dogfight by the end of this round of fixtures.

Lazio meanwhile are still in the hunt for their first league title in 20 years and are also practically guaranteed Champions League football next season for the first time since 2007-08, as they are 20 points ahead of fifth-placed local rivals Roma.

Immobile's goal, a fine left-footed finish three minutes after the break, was another example of Luis Alberto's importance to Lazio, as it was a league-leading 13th assist of the season for the former Liverpool man.

His strike also meant the Italy forward equalled his own record for the highest number of goals scored by a Lazio player in a Serie A season.

However, Lazio will have to do without the 30-year-old against AC Milan on Saturday, as he will be suspended after being booked for the handball that gave his team another uphill struggle to overcome.

Football fans love watching a teenager making his way into the senior team and wreaking havoc by skimming through the entire line of defence when it matters the most. Over the years, the faithful have been a bystander to some of the most astonishing individual displays from these young guns, and on June 6, 2020, a fantastic curling effort by a certain Florian Wirtz in the 89th minute against Bayern Munich in a Bundesliga encounter made him the league’s youngest-ever goalscorer.

On that note, here are the youngest goalscorers of Europe’s top-five leagues.

Premier League - James Vaughan (16 years and 270 days)

After enjoying a stellar run of form in Everton’s youth academy, striker James Vaughan was given his senior team debut in April 2005 when Everton locked horns with Crystal Palace. He was introduced in the 73rd minute, when the likes of Mikel Arteta and a Tim Cahill had already put Everton in control, and it didn’t take long for him to assert his authority as he became Premier League’s youngest-ever scorer at the age of just 16 years and 270 days, taking the mantle from James Milner, who held the record for three years.

La Liga - Fabrice Olinga (16 years and 98 days)

During the 2012/13 La Liga season, Malaga manager Manuel Pellegrini called in a certain Fabrice Olinga for his side’s league opener against Celta de Vigo. The Cameroonian forward, who had enrolled himself in the Samuel Eto’o Foundation early in his career, was named on the bench, and with the scoreline still reading 0-0, he was introduced as a substitute in the 60th minute.

As it turned out, he went on to score the only goal of the game and at 16 years and 98 days, became La Liga’s youngest scorer, surpassing the previous holder Iker Muniain.

Bundesliga - Florian Wirtz (17 years and 34 days)

With regular starter Kai Havertz unavailable for the big game against Bayern Munich at home, Bayer Leverkusen manager Peter Bosz decided to go with Florian Wirtz in the line-up. The home side took the lead as early as the ninth minute but couldn’t maintain the consistency as Bayern put four goals past to take a 4-1 lead.

With the game already put to bed, Leverkusen were looking for consolation and they got it through Florian Wirtz, who sumptuously put a curling effort past Manuel Neuer in the 89th minute to become Bundesliga’s youngest scorer of all time at 17 years and 34 days.

Ligue 1 ?Neal Maupay (16 years and 123 days)

Back in 1963, forward Richard Krawczyk, while playing for Lens, became the French league’s youngest-ever goalscorer at 16 years and 107 days, but since the league’s name was officially changed to Ligue 1 ahead of the 2002/03 season, Neal Maupay holds the record at 16 years and 123 days.

Maupay made his senior team debut with Nice in 2012 as an injury-time substitute, and he went on to score four goals in 19 appearances in all competitions before a torn cruciate ligament cut his subsequent season short.

Serie A - Pietro Pellegri (16 years and 72 days)

Like Ligue 1, Serie A had its youngest scorer dating a ways back, 1937 to be precise, when striker Amedeo Amadei scored for Roma at the age of 15 years and 287 days against Lucchese in a 5-1 loss. However, since the league moved to its 20-team format in 2004, the record belongs to a certain Pietro Pellegri who, at 16 years and 72 days, scored twice in Genoa’s 3-2 loss to Lazio in 2017 to become the youngest scorer of the league.

Nicolo Barella sealed a 2-1 win over Verona to send Inter Milan top of Serie A on Saturday as Napoli were jeered by their fans after being held to a goalless draw at home by Genoa.

Former Cagliari midfielder Barella scored his first goal for Inter with a stunning curling strike seven minutes from time, allowing Inter to overtake defending champions Juventus.

Inter sit two points ahead of Juve, who host 13th-placed AC Milan in Turin on Sunday.

But Serie A runners-up Napoli saw their winless league run extended to four games, and are stuck in seventh position, 12 points behind Inter.

Napoli fans were furious with the point against their northern rivals who are 17th in the league, days after the team's Champions League last 16 progress was stalled with a 1-1 draw against Salzburg.

Inter coach Antonio Conte had also been furious after his side threw away a two-goal lead to fall to a 3-2 Champions League defeat at Borussia Dortmund in midweek.

But the former Juventus and Chelsea boss was happy with the way his team hit back.

"I saw an important response after Dortmund," said Conte. "The lads are doing something important -- 31 points in 12 games is a nice haul.

"Now there is a (international) break and we're going to rest after a victory that gives us enthusiasm and the knowledge that we're on the right path."

Inter had got off to the worst possible start when Valerio Verre put Verona ahead from the spot on 19 minutes after Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic tripped Mattia Zaccagni.

Goalkeeper Marco Silvestri and the Verona defence held off Inter at the San Siro before Matias Vecino broke through, heading home a Valentino Lazaro cross on 65 minutes.

Barella completed the comeback late on, whipping off his jersey as he celebrated wildly with his teammates.

It was his second goal since joining Inter last summer having scored the equaliser in a 1-1 Champions League draw with Slavia Prague.

"We wanted to win at all costs, despite the fatigue from the recent matches," said Barella.

"Now it's time for the national team and I'm already focused on that," he added of Italy's upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers.

Torino back winning

In Turin, Andrea Belotti converted a pair of penalties with Alex Berenguer bagging a brace of his own to get Torino back to winning ways with a 4-0 romp over 10-man Brescia.

Torino snapped their six-match winless run and inflicted a first defeat on new Brescia coach Fabio Grosso, whose side are second from bottom in the Serie A table.

Belotti got Torino off the mark on 17 minutes with a penalty awarded after a Simone Verdi free-kick bounced off Brescia defender Andrea Cistana's arm.

The second came on 26 minutes when Czech defender Ales Mateju was also deemed to have used his arm to block a Belotti shot after a VAR review.

Belotti again slotted in to bring his tally to seven Serie A goals this season.

Brescia were reduced to 10 men before the break when Mateju was sent off for a second yellow card after fouling Belotti.

A man down, Grosso substituted Brescia striker Mario Balotelli for defender Bruno Martella after the break.

Jesse Joronen denied Belotti a hat-trick before Berenguer fired past the Finnish keeper with 15 minutes remaining.

And five minutes later, Berenguer latched onto Diego Laxalt's long ball forward to slot in his second goal this season.

Brescia, with a game in hand, fell to their fourth consecutive defeat with their winless run now stretching back seven games.

Torino's first win since September 26 puts them 11th.
