The Big Bash League (BBL) is Australia’s premier T20 competition, established in 2011. The tournament takes place annually in the Australian summer, typically beginning in December and ending in January or February.

Sydney Sixers were the inaugural champions of the Big Bash League. They defeated Perth Scorchers in the final by seven wickets courtesy of a 41-ball 70 from Moises Henriques. The Sixers are the second-most successful team in the tournament, winning it two more times in 2019-20 and 2020-21.

Perth Scorchers went on to become the most successful team in BBL history with five titles. After losing the final of the first two editions, they went on to win back-to-back titles in the third and fourth edition. They added three more titles in 2016-17, 2021-22 and 2022-23. They defeated Brisbane Heat in the 2022-23 final to win their fifth BBL crown.

The Scorchers and Sixers reached the final on seven occasions each, which includes four against each other. The two teams are also the only ones to win back-to-back titles.

Among the eight teams that have competed in the tournament across the 11 editions, six of them went on to win the title at least once. Besides the Sixers and Scorchers, Brisbane Heat have won the BBL title in 2012-13 and 2023-24. The likes of Adelaide Strikers (2017-18), Melbourne Renegades (2018-19) and Sydney Thunder (2015?6) have emerged triumphant once each.

Melbourne Stars and Hobart Hurricanes are the only teams yet to lay hands on the trophy. Stars reached three finals and Hurricanes reached two of them, but failed to get over the line in the summit clash.

The Big Bash League (BBL), Australia’s T20 cricket competition, has introduced a new innovation to the game called Electra Stumps.

Initially used in Women’s BBL, the Electra Stumps featured for the first time in a men’s game during a BBL 2023-24 match between Adelaide Strikers and Sydney Sixers at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on December 22.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan and ex-Australia batter Mark Waugh unveiled the Electra Stumps before the match began.

What are Electra Stumps?

Electra Stumps are the latest type of cricket stumps which feature an LED setup. These are equipped with lights that illuminate in five different colour patterns to signal different events during a cricket match.

The electra stumps light up in five different colour patterns during the following events in a match:

  • Dismissal - In case a wicket falls, all three stumps will flash red and then fire.
  • Fours - When a player hits a boundary, the lights on the stumps change colour one after another. It shifts from purple to green, and so on.
  • Sixes - When a batter slams a maximum, colours run from bottom to top. It scrolls rapidly as they move up.
  • No ball - When a bowler oversteps, the stumps turn red and white in alternating up and down motion. It is later accompanied by a loudspeaker siren, indicating a no-ball.
  • Between overs - When the players switch ends in between overs, the stumps light up in pulsating blue and purple colours.

The Electra Stumps are designed to provide spectators, both on and off the field, with better visual cues during a match. It is also expected to make watching matches more engaging, adding an extra layer of excitement to the game.

If the innovation finds widespread adoption in the game, Electra Stumps could eventually replace the trademark red and white stumps and traditional wooden stumps in various cricket leagues across the globe.

Australia’s Big Bash League 2023-24 season will start on December 7, 2023, with Brisbane Heat facing Melbourne Stars in the opening BBL 2023-24 fixture.

Last season’s finalist Brisbane Heat will host three-time runners-up Melbourne Stars at The Gabba in the curtain-raiser of the marquee Australian T20 League.

Organised by Cricket Australia, the 13th edition of the BBL will be played in a new format as the number of matches have been reduced from 61 to 44 to shorten the window.

Adelaide Strikers, Brisbane Heat, Hobart Hurricanes, Melbourne Renegades, Melbourne Stars, Perth Scorchers, Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder are the eight franchises that will compete for the coveted BBL title.

As per the new BBL format, a total of 40 league matches have been scheduled with each team playing 10 matches. The top four teams in the standings after all league matches will qualify for the BBL 2023-24 playoffs. The playoffs format has been restructured with a four-game finals series as compared to the five matches played in previous seasons.

The new BBL playoffs format comprises the Qualifier, the Knockout, the Challenger and the Final.

The top two teams in the standings after all league matches will compete in the Qualifier to secure their place in the BBL final.

Meanwhile, the third-placed and the fourth-placed team will lock horns in the Knockout.

The winner of the Knockout will face the loser of the Qualifier in the Challenger to book their place in the BBL summit clash.

The Big Bash League 2023-24 final will be played on January 24, 2024.

Meanwhile, the upcoming BBL season will take a short break for Australia cricket team’s opening Test against Pakistan in Perth from December 14-18. The BBL 2023-24 action will resume from December 19 onwards.

As per the BBL 2023-24 schedule, Boxing Day and the New Year’s Day will host double headers.

Sydney Sixers will host Melbourne Stars at Sydney Cricket Ground on Boxing Day, while defending champions Perth Scorchers will face Melbourne Renegades on the same day.

On New Year’s Day, Hobart Hurricanes will square off against Sydney Thunder, while Brisbane Heat will host Sydney Sixers at The Gabba.

Perth Scorchers defeated Brisbane Heat by five wickets in last season’s BBL final to clinch an unprecedented fifth title.

The Big Bash League 2022-23 is Australia’s premier domestic T20 league that takes place typically in the Aussie summer every year.

The league was formed after the previous T20 competition, which had the six domestic teams competing in it, was scrapped by Cricket Australia. The BBL was introduced with eight new franchises based in six different cities in 2011.

Perth Scorchers entered BBL 2022-23 as the defending champions. They defeated Sydney Sixers in the final to clinch their fourth title and also denied the Sixers an elusive opportunity to bag three titles in a row.

While the Scorchers and the Sixers are the only teams to win multiple titles, Melbourne Stars and Hobart Hurricanes are the only teams yet to lay hands on the BBL trophy. Adelaide Strikers (2017-18), Sydney Thunder (2015-16), Melbourne Renegades (2018-19) and Brisbane Heat (2012-13) won the title once each.

The 12th edition of the tournament kick-started with a clash between 2015-16 champions Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Stars on December 13. Get the full BBL 2022-23 schedule.

The ongoing edition already witnessed a few record-breaking moments. Sydney Thunder getting bowled out for 15 runs against Adelaide Strikers to register the lowest T20 total of all time, to the Strikers completing the biggest BBL run chase ever against Perth Scorchers, the 2022-23 season has been action-packed.

The league stage of the tournament will culminate on January 25, 2023, and the playoffs will begin on January 27. The final of the 2022-23 edition will be played on February 4.

The Big Bash League 2022-23 draft is scheduled for August 28, with a total of 332 overseas players set to go under the hammer.

The BBL draft for the upcoming season will see a clear break from the existing policy of franchises signing contract deals with players.

Here’s all you need to know about the Big Bash League 2022-23 draft.

What is the Big Bash League 2022-23 draft?

Big Bash League 2022-23 draft is a process where the eight franchises will take turns to select from a pool of international players who have full availability to play in the upcoming season.

While they will be assigned with a specific salary cap, the international players will be bound to a one-year contract with their new owners. Should they opt to play in the subsequent season, the players must get themselves nominated and re-enter the draft.

What is the format for the Big Bash League 2022-23 draft?

The Big Bash League 2022-23 draft will consist of four rounds, with each team allowed one pick per round.

While allowed to pass and not pick in certain rounds, teams must have a minimum of two picks and a maximum of three picks in the BBL draft. Each franchise can have a maximum of three overseas players in their XI.

After the second round, the Big Bash League 2022-23 draft will follow a snake flow order. By this, we mean that the franchise that had the last pick in Round 2 will have the first choice to select a player in Round 3. This flow will continue, allowing the team with the last pick in Round 3 to pick the first player in Round 4.

What are the rounds in the Big Bash League 2022-23 draft?

There will be four rounds in the Big Bash League 2022-23 draft.

Round 1: Platinum

Round 2: Platinum and Gold

Round 3: Gold and Silver

Round 4: Silver and Bronze

What is the Big Bash League 2022-23 draft order?

The Big Bash League 2022-23 draft order was decided by a weighted lottery system.

Picks 1-3 were allotted to the teams that failed to make the BBL 2021-22 playoffs. Melbourne Renegades, who finished last, will be the first team to pick players in the BBL 2022-23 draft. They will be followed by Brisbane Heat and Melbourne Stars.

The five finalists (eventual champions Perth Scorchers, Sydney Sixers, Sydney Thunder, Adelaide Strikers and Hobart Hurricanes) are assigned picks 4-8 based on their standing on last season’s points table.

How many players can teams retain in the Big Bash League 2022-23 draft?

Each franchise is entitled to retain one player in the Big Bash League 2022-23 draft.

An overseas player is eligible for retention if they have played one game or were named as a team’s X-factor player in a BBL 2021-22 fixture. For the unversed, an X-factor player in BBL is one who at the 10-over mark of the first innings in a match last season was swapped into the playing XI instead of an individual who started the game.

There are two conditions regarding player retention:

  1. If Team A wants to retain a player but a different team opts for him before Team A chooses their pick in that round, Team A can use their retention pick to draft the concerned player.
  2. If Team A wants to use their retention pick but have already made a selection in the same round, they lose their chance of exercising their retention pick.

There are 28 players who are eligible to be retained by franchises they represented in the previous edition.

Who are the Platinum Players in the Big Bash League 2022-23 draft?

There are 12 overseas players who have been listed in the Platinum Players category for the Big Bash League 2022-23 draft. They will be paid AUSD 340,000.

The players on the Platinum List are Faf du Plessis, Jason Roy, Liam Livingstone, Sam Billings, Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell, David Willey, Shadab Khan, Dwayne Bravo, Rashid Khan, Chris Jordan, and Trent Boult.
