Arsenal Women pulled off a stunning comeback to defeat West Ham United Women 4-3 in a thrilling Women’s Super League (WSL) match at Meadow Park on Sunday, March 2. The Gunners were trailing 3-1 early in the second half but overcame it with three goals in six minutes.

West Ham’s early dominance

West Ham started the match strongly, with defender Amber Tysiak scoring twice from the corners in the opening 12 minutes. She headed in Viviane Asseyi's cross at seven minutes and scored another goal five minutes later, putting West Ham 2-0 ahead.

However, Arsenal managed to pull one back before halftime when Chloe Kelly netted a goal. This was her first since rejoining the club. Thanks to Mariona Caldentey's cross, they reduced the deficit to 2-1.

The Irons extended their lead early in the second half. Shekiera Martinez navigated past Arsenal's Steph Catley and Daphne Van Domselaar and scored 3-1. Despite their strong attack early on, West Ham struggled to contain Arsenal's second-half comeback.

The introduction of Stina Blackstenius pressured West Ham's defence, leading to three conceding goals from the Gunners.

Arsenal’s epic three-goal comeback

Facing a two-goal deficit, Arsenal launched a dramatic comeback during the game’s second half. Katie McCabe started it with a powerful goal in the 56th minute, igniting hope for the club. Just two minutes later, Leah Williamson headed in Kelly's cross and netted a goal to level the scores at 3-3.

The Gunners' momentum only grew from there. In the 62nd minute, the referee awarded West Ham's Kirsty Smith a penalty for a handball. Caldentey, then, stepped up and pulled a goal to make it 4-3, putting Arsenal ahead for the first time in the match. With a roaring Meadow Park crowd, the Gunners turned the game around and secured victory.

WSL title: What comes next?

This victory keeps Arsenal’s title hopes alive, especially after being just eight points behind leaders Chelsea in the table. Gunners defender and Player of the Match Williamson shared that the team was confident right from the start.

‘We were just getting frustrated in the first halfI never thought we’d lose she remarked.

The match against the Irons showed the Gunnersresilience and attacking skills on full display. They remain determined to challenge for the top spot.

The Gunners will look to build on this momentum as they move forward through the rest of the season, with the next WSL fixture against Everton on March 14. They’re also gearing up for a future matchup against Liverpool for the FA Women’s Cup quarterfinals on March 9.

Meanwhile, West Ham will seek to rebound from this defeat when they face Manchester City on Thursday, March 6, with the hope of strengthening their position in the standings.
