The Big Bash League (BBL) is Australia’s premier T20 competition, established in 2011. The tournament takes place annually in the Australian summer, typically beginning in December and ending in January or February. 

Sydney Sixers were the inaugural champions of the Big Bash League. They defeated Perth Scorchers in the final by seven wickets courtesy of a 41-ball 70 from Moises Henriques. The Sixers are the second-most successful team in the tournament, winning it two more times in 2019-20 and 2020-21.

Perth Scorchers went on to become the most successful team in BBL history with five titles. After losing the final of the first two editions, they went on to win back-to-back titles in the third and fourth edition. They added three more titles in 2016-17, 2021-22 and 2022-23. They defeated Brisbane Heat in the 2022-23 final to win their fifth BBL crown. 

The Scorchers and Sixers reached the final on seven occasions each, which includes four against each other. The two teams are also the only ones to win back-to-back titles.

Among the eight teams that have competed in the tournament across the 11 editions, six of them went on to win the title at least once. Besides the Sixers and Scorchers, Brisbane Heat have won the BBL title in 2012-13 and 2023-24. The likes of Adelaide Strikers (2017-18), Melbourne Renegades (2018-19) and Sydney Thunder (2015�?6) have emerged triumphant once each. 

Melbourne Stars and Hobart Hurricanes are the only teams yet to lay hands on the trophy. Stars reached three finals and Hurricanes reached two of them, but failed to get over the line in the summit clash.

Adelaide Strikers and Hobart Hurricanes have already played twice this season and the spoils have been shared. Their first meeting saw the Hurricanes riding on Ben McDermott’s unbeaten century to cruise to a seven-wicket win, while the Strikers returned the favour in the reverse fixture by beating Hurricanes by seven wickets.

There is hardly anything to separate these two teams, but the fact that a confident STR side are unbeaten in their last four matches and are in good form currently gives them the upper hand on Friday.

STR’s Jonathan Wells is a preferred choice for a batter given that the 33-year-old has accrued 129 fantasy points from his last two outings. Top tip: Best bowler

The tournament’s top wicket-taker, fast bowler Peter Siddle is the outright choice for the bowling position in your fantasy team. The 37-year-old veteran has picked 23 wickets in 14 matches at a strike rate of 13.6, resulting in a tally of 780 fantasy points. As many as 183 of those 780 points have come in his last three outings.

Top tip: Best all-rounder and wicket-keeper

HUR’s D'Arcy Short is a must-have pick for the all-rounder spot in your fantasy team. The 31-year-old has been picked by 91.53 per cent of fantasy users, making him the second-most picked player after Siddle for this match. Short is his team's second-highest run-scorer this season with 388 runs in 14 matches.

HUR’s Ben McDermott is an obvious choice for a wicket-keeper lest we forget that he’s the leading scorer this season with 571 runs. The 27-year-old wicket-keeper batsman, who has made three fifties and two centuries in the ongoing campaign, has accumulated 190 fantasy points from his two meetings against STR this season. Another high-scoring performance is expected from the wicket-keeper on Friday.

STR’s Peter Siddle has managed to outshine several big names this season. The 37-year-old bowler has picked 18 wickets in 10 innings and is bowling at an excellent average of 18.77. With 585 fantasy points, Siddle is the most picked player for this match.

Top tip: Best all-rounder and wicket-keeper

STR’s Matthew Short may have struggled in his last few outings, but the fact remains that he is your best bet for an all-rounder. The 26-year-old has scored 265 runs this season, resulting in a tally of 520 fantasy points and could have a positive impact on your fantasy team.

Meanwhile, there wouldn’t have been any competition for the wicket-keeping spot if HEA’s Ben Duckett was certain to participate in the contest. However since his inclusion is not a given, STR’s Harry Nielsen, who has made 130 runs this season, becomes the obvious wicket-keeping choice.

It certainly will be a smart move to draft seasoned Australian pacer Peter Siddle into your fantasy team as he’s the top-rated bowler for the STA vs STR fixture. The 35-year-old is showing no signs of slowing down as he has bagged 16 wickets at an economy of 9.40 in BBL 2021-22. Siddle - with 26 wickets across all formats at the MCG - will look to spell trouble for the Melbourne Stars skipper Glenn Maxwell.

Among all-rounders, Matthew Short is well-placed to appease fantasy cricket players. The Australian all-rounder - with 507 fantasy points to his name - has aggregated 257 runs and two wickets so far and is fancied by onlookers to wreak havoc in the powerplay overs.

Joe Clarke qualifies as a smart wicket-keeping pick for this contest. The Australian wicket-keeper has accounted for more runs (203) than his opposite number Harry Nielsen (116) but is slightly behind in terms of dismissals (Nielsen - 6, Clarke - 4). With 333 fantasy points to his name, Joe Clarke appears confident of forking out a match-winning performance on Monday.

They will be looking for a win come Wednesday in order to have some breathing space between them and those sides below them in the standings. HUR’s Ben McDermott has made quite an impact this season. The 27-year-old is currently the highest run-scorer of the tournament with 353 runs in a mere six innings. Given that he is batting at an average of more than 70, it comes as no surprise that he’s accumulated the most fantasy points (547) among all the players involved in the upcoming match between the teams.

Top tip: Best bowler

HUR bowler Tom Rogers has picked 14 wickets in seven matches - the second-most by any bowler this season - while maintaining an economy of just 7.03. As a result, the 27-year-old has accrued 514 fantasy points and is the most picked bowler for this contest, making him a safe choice to go with in this contest. 

Top tip: Best all-rounder and wicket-keeper

With 416 fantasy points in eight outings, HUR’s D’Arcy Short is the best pick for an all-rounder. The 31-year-old has made it to the Dream Team in five of his eight appearances this season and has occasionally proved to be quite a coup for fantasy players.

For a wicket-keeper, Matthew Wade of HUR should be considered ahead of STR’s Harry Nielsen given the fact that the former has been slightly more consistent with the bat. As a result of this, Wade has accumulated 314 fantasy points while making it to the Dream Team on three occasions this campaign.

SIX captain Moises Henriques is an outright choice for an all-rounder. The 34-year-old is the second-highest run-getter this season having scored 204 runs in four matches at an impressive average of 102.00. His success with the bat makes up for his lack of success with the ball.

As for a wicket-keeper, SIX gloveman Josh Philippe should be picked ahead of anyone else. The 24-year-old has notched 259 runs this season - the most by any batsman - resulting in a tally of 404 fantasy points from four matches. This is the best return among all the players involved in this game.

It is no surprise that Rashid Khan tops the fantasy picks amongst bowlers, and rightly so, given his record of 72 BBL wickets in 50 matches. The Afghanistan star scalped 16 wickets in the last edition of BBL and is poised to unsettle the Renegades�?batting order on Tuesday.

Top tip: Best all-rounder and wicket-keeper

As far as all-rounders are concerned, one can pick Mohammad Nabi. The Afghanistan star has a record of 256 runs and 34 wickets across four BBL seasons and makes for a valuable addition in fantasy cricket teams at 9.5 credits.

For the wicket-keeper spot, Adelaide Strikers�?Alex Carey pips Melbourne Renegades�?Sam Harper because of experience and his match-winning capabilities as a batter. The Australian international had an impressive BBL 2020 campaign, tallying 425 runs and scoring the first century in the tournament. He is likely to produce some similar displays in the upcoming season as well.

It took until the very last day of the Big Bash League 2020-21 season leagues stages to decide the five teams who will be playing in the playoffs, starting from Friday, January 28.

While Hobart Hurricanes missed out on the playoffs following a shocking 11-run defeat against Melbourne Renegades. Brisbane Heat found their way into the top half with a six-run win over Perth Scorchers, who had already qualified for the play-offs.

With Sydney Sixers finishing at the top of the BBL points table, the stage is set for another exciting round, and I’m pretty sure the upcoming matches will live upto the hype. 

That said, here are my picks from the first two playoffs games:

Chris Lynn - Brisbane Heat

Credit where it’s due, Chris Lynn has performed exceptionally well, especially after failing to get a game in the Indian T20 League 2020. In just 10 games this season, the hard-hitter has accumulated 420 runs at an average of 42 and a strike rate of 157.30. The 30-year-old has scored four half-centuries in his last six BBL games and I expect more of the same from the explosive opener as his team squares off against Adelaide Strikers; a team against whom Lynn scored his lowest score (17) in the ongoing season. He certainly has some point to prove.

Wes Agar - Adelaide Strikers

The fourth highest wicket-taker of BBL 2020-21, 23-year-old Wes Agar has been a revelation this season. Though he has been expensive as well as wicketless in his last two BBL outings, Agar knows a thing or two about bothering Brisbane Heat - against whom he delivered his best spell of 4/27. Agar had scorched past Heat’s batting order by getting the better of Marnus Labuschagne, Lynn, Joe Denly and Max Bryant, as Strikers had limited their opponent to just 115. It was arguably one of the best bowling performances I’ve seen in the current edition, and Agar will be raring to have a go once again.

Josh Philippe - Sydney Sixers

Sydney Sixers�?opener Josh Philippe has been amongst runs this season, although inconsistency has been an issue for the player. The 23-year-old, once set, has shown the capabilities of wreaking havoc, but tends to lose his wicket quite early more often than not. Following his match-winning 64 against Sydney Thunder and 84 against Perth Scorchers, Philippe has failed to cross the 20-run mark in all of his last three outings. It’s a good thing that he has a prior history against Scorchers, and I think they will be on the receiving end of another explosive approach.

Jhye Richardson - Perth Scorchers

Jhye Richardson has been a phenomenal presence for Perth Scorchers, and one of the reasons why they finished second in the points table. In 14 games so far this season, the 24-year-old has picked 27 wickets - five wickets clear of his closest opponent - and that at an economy of just 7.08. Richardson has picked four wickets in two matches against Sixers and has conceded just 46 runs this season, meaning that he concedes less than six runs per over against them. A game as important as this requires a lustrous performance, and I firmly believe Richardson will do well once again.

There is absolutely no margin for error from here on as Big Bash League 2020-21 season reaches it playoffs stage. Brisbane Heat kick off the round with a tough tie against Adelaide Strikers on Friday, January 29, while Sydney Sixers, who finished at the top of the BBL points table, lock horns with Perth Scorchers on Saturday, January 30.

Since five teams qualify for the round, the format of the Big Bash League playoffs is designed as such that the teams finishing first and second in the tally will have two opportunities to make their way into the final. The four BBL playoffs finals are known as the Eliminator, the Knockout, the Qualifier and the Challenger, and this is how it works:

So with that being said, here we look at some key statistics that will help you ease past the first two playoffs.

Brisbane Heat vs Adelaide Strikers

Brisbane Heat and Adelaide Strikers met twice in the ongoing Big Bash League season and it was the latter who emerged victorious in both of these fixtures. While the first one was a hard-fought victory, that second was, in fact, an easy route. Both teams are coming on the back of three victories in their last five outings, but what gives the Strikers an edge is their head-to-head record against Heat.

In a total of 13 meetings between the two sides, Strikers have won eight while Heat have gotten just five victories. In addition, Strikers have also won three of their last five meetings with Heat; all of them have come in a row. Even the venue - The Gabba in Brisbane - favours Strikers, who have won five of their last six BBL matches there.

Adelaide Strikers hold the upright advantage against Brisbane Heat as they have averaged 171 runs in their last five outings while batting first. Heat, on the other hand, average 161.

Sydney Sixers vs Perth Scorchers

Sydney Sixers vs Perth Scorchers head-to-head record favours the latter, who have won 11 of their 18 meetings in total. This season though, the teams have been on the neck of each other, having won a game apiece. The winner of Monday’s Adelaide Strikers v Sydney Thunder clash will cement their place in the top-five. On the other hand, Brisbane Heat need to beat Scorchers and then depend on other results to go their way if they are to make it to the top-five. Chris Lynn-led Heat have won just two of their last five completed BBL matches.
