The Spain national football team will lock horns with Denmark in their upcoming UEFA Nations League 2024-25 League A Group D match at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The Denmark vs Spain, UEFA Nations League 2024-25 match will start at 1:15 AM IST on Friday, November 16.

Under the tutelage of head coach Luis de la Fuente, title holders Spain are placed on top of their Group D standings and have already booked their place in the UEFA Nations League 2024-25 quarter-finals.

Spain will head into the game after defeating Serbia 3-0 in their previous UEFA Nations League match at the Estadio Nuevo Arcángel in Córdoba, Spain in October.

Aymeric Laporte, Alvaro Morata and Alex Baena scored a goal each to help La Roja bag another three points.

While Spain have accumulated 10 points from four games, they will look to seal top spot in the group with a win against Denmark in Copenhagen.

On the other hand, the Denmark national football team will look to return to winning ways after they played out a 2-2 draw against Switzerland in their previous fixture last month.

Remo Freuler gave Switzerland the lead in the 26th minute before Gustav Isaksen equalised in the next minute for Denmark.

Zeki Amdouni converted a penalty to make it 2-1 in favour of Switzerland before half-time. Later in the 69th minute, Christian Eriksen netted to salvage a crucial point for Denmark.

Having registered two wins, one draw and one loss, Denmark are currently placed second in the Group D standings with seven points, three points clear of third-placed Serbia.

The Manchester United duo of Rasmus Hojlund and Christian Eriksen are expected to start against Spain.

The likes of Kasper Schmeichel, Jannik Vestergaard, Victor Nelsson, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Morten Hjulmand and Joachim Andersen are also expected to feature in the starting XI.

For Spain, Lamine Yamal, Rodri, Dani Carvajal, Gavi and Unai Simon are unavailable for this clash.

Meanwhile, Marc Casado, Samu Omorodion and Aitor Paredes have earned their maiden call-ups and could make their first appearance for Spain in Copenhagen.

Denmark vs Spain football head-to-head

The Denmark vs Spain football head-to-head record favours the latter. Spain have won 13 of the 17 matches that they have played against each other so far. Denmark have registered just two victories while as many as two games have ended in draws.

The last time these two sides met, Spain beat Denmark in a UEFA Nations League 2024-25 match courtesy Martín Zubimendi’s strike in the 79th minute.

Spain will host Denmark in a Group A4 match of the UEFA Nations League 2024-25 at the Estadio Nueva Condomina in Murcia on Sunday, October 13.

The Spain vs Denmark UEFA Nations League 2024-25 match will start at 12:15 AM IST on Sunday. Live streaming and telecast of the match will be available in India.

Defending Champions Spain are currently second in Group A4 of the UEFA Nations League 2024-25 with four points after one win and a draw following the first two rounds.

The hosts who started the current campaign with a 0-0 draw at Serbia made amends with a 4-1 win against Switzerland in the last game.

Former Real Madrid striker Joselu scored once while Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Fabian Ruiz scored two goals and Barcelona’s Ferran Torres netted once in Spain’s comfortable away win at Switzerland.

Meanwhile, Denmark had a perfect start to the UEFA Nations League 2024-25 campaign with two wins from as many matches and enter the third round as Group A4 toppers with six points. Serbia and Switzerland, placed third and fourth, are the other teams in Group A4.

Denmark registered identical 2-0 wins against Switzerland and Serbia in their first two rounds. As they get ready for a tough challenge against the UEFA Euro 2024 winners Spain, Denmark will be encouraged by the fact that all their goals in the first two rounds have come from different players.

Spain are currently third in the FIFA Men’s football rankings whereas Denmark are placed 20th as per the latest list.

The UEFA Nations League 2024-25 has a total of 54 teams split into four leagues based on their international ranking. Three leagues A, B and C contain four groups of four teams each whereas League D has two groups of three teams.

Teams in League A will vie for the UEFA Nations League Final that is scheduled to be held in June 2025. All the four group winners and runners-up in League A will play a double-legged quarter-finals with the winners proceeding to play the semi-finals.

Spain won the last edition of the UEFA Nations League in 2023 after beating Croatia on penalties in the final.

Spain vs Denmark football head-to-head

Spain holds a clear advantage in their head-to-head record against Denmark with 12 wins from 16 matches. Spain’s last meeting with Denmark was in an international friendly in 2008 which La Roja comfortably won 3-0.

Denmark, on the other hand, have won twice against Spain with their last win coming way back in 1993 when they won 1-0 in a FIFA World Cup Qualifier. Two matches between these sides have ended in draws.

Defending champions France will lock horns with Denmark in their second fixture of the FIFA World Cup 2022 on November 26 at the Ras Abu Aboud Stadium in Qatar. The match is scheduled to start at 9:30 PM Indian Standard Time (IST). Watch France vs Denmark live in India.

The France national football team won their opening Group D fixture against Australia 4-1.

After falling behind inside the first 10 minutes, Les Bleus scored two goals on either side of half-time to register a comfortable win courtesy of Olivier Giroud’s record-equalling brace and one each from Kylian Mbappe and Adrien Rabiot.

The AC Milan striker needs just one more goal to get past Thierry Henry’s goal-scoring record for France, which currently stands at 51.

However, their first-choice defender Lucas Hernandez suffered an unfortunate injury, which subsequently ruled him out of the rest of the football World Cup campaign.

On the other hand, the Denmark national football team’s tournament opener against Tunisia ended in a goalless draw.

The Simon Kjaer-led side too had an injury concern as central midfielder Thomas Delany suffered a knee injury at the stroke of half-time, which eventually led to a premature end to his World Cup campaign.

France vs Denmark head-to-head

The two sides have faced each other on 16 occasions across all competitions, with France holding an advantage over Denmark, winning eight and drawing two.

As far as FIFA World Cups are concerned, the two teams have squared off on three instances, including two in France’s title-winning campaigns in 1998 and 2018.

Denmark will field a playing XI without forward Kasper Dolberg, who is doubtful due to a shoulder injury he sustained in the game against France. Kasper Hjulmand is likely to reshuffle his squad a bit and could have Christian Eriksen start from the bench, with the Brentford man having started the first two games.

For Croatia, Josko Gvardiol underwent a thigh surgery and will be unavailable until further notice. Mario Pasalic is expected to start in place of the struggling Lovro Majer.

Denmark vs Croatia recent form

With two wins in two, Denmark couldn’t have asked for a better start to their UEFA Nations League 2022-23 campaign. The Group 1 leaders have been clinical at home in recent times, winning each of their last five fixtures across all competitions by an aggregate score of 14-1. The Danes are also on a three-match winning streak.

Croatia, on the other hand, avoided a second defeat in a row as they held reigning champions France to a 1-1 draw. With just two wins in their last 12 Nations League games since the competition began in 2018, the Checkered Ones will need to be at their utmost best to get anything out of Saturday’s tie.

The semi-final round in UEFA Euro 2020 begins with a heavyweight clash between Italy and Spain on Wednesday, July 07.

The Italy national football team extended their unbeaten run in international football to 32 games following a nail-biting 2-1 victory against Belgium and will start as favourites against Spain.

Luis Enrique’s Spain are coming off a lacklustre win against Switzerland, which went into a penalty shootout after the game finished at 1-1. La Roja struggled for consistency in their entire fixture but somehow escaped to register their first semi-finals appearance since their victorious campaign in 2012.

Italy and Spain last faced each other in a UEFA Euro game in France 2016, with the former winning 2-0. The Azzurri, however, are still plagued by the ghosts of their Euro 2012 final defeat to Spain and will be eager to exact revenge on Sergio Busquets and Co.

Gareth Southgate’s men eased into the semi-finals of UEFA Euro 2020 with a 4-0 rout of Ukraine at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. They will take on the Denmark national football team, the only dark horse remaining in the competition.

Since Christian Eriksen’s collapse in the team’s opening game of the tournament, Denmark have grown from strength to strength and brushed aside the Czech Republic 2-1 to book its first semi-final appearance in European championships since the title-winning campaign in 1992.

Both the semi-finals of UEFA Euro 2020 will be played at the Wembley Stadium in England.

Switzerland’s victory over France on penalties in the round of 16 of UEFA Euro 2020 will go down as one of the biggest upsets in the competition’s history.

Entering the tournament and round as outright favourites, France played out a six-goal thriller at the National Arena in Romania before being beaten 4-5 on penalties.

To everyone’s surprise, it was Switzerland who got the early breakthrough after Haris Seferovic beat Hugo Lloris with a sumptuous header to score the opener. The Swiss then missed a penalty in the second half, leaving the door open for a French comeback.

Le Bleus capitalised on the penalty miss by the Swiss and made a fantastic comeback, moving into a 3-1 lead through a Karim Benzema brace and a long-ranger by Paul Pogba. The Red Crosses, however, scored two goals in the final nine minutes of normal time to force the game into extra time and then penalties, where Kylian Mbappe missed his spot-kick as Switzerland booked their place in the quarter-finals.

Over the course of its long history, the competition has seen several such shocks like the Czech Republic beating Italy in Euro 1996 or Sweden beating England 2-1 in Euro 1992. On that note, we take a look at three of the biggest upsets in UEFA Euro.

Germany 0-2 Denmark - 1992 Euro final

Not much was expected from Denmark in Euro 1992 but they finished second in Group A with only one win in three games, which was a 2-1 victory over France. The Danes then had to rely on a penalty shootout win against the Netherlands in the semi-final.

Squaring off against the mighty Germans in the final, midfielder John Jensen broke the deadlock in the 18th minute before Kim Vilfort’s tame effort made it two 12 minutes from full time. Germany could only watch as Denmark defended their lead to lift the title.

The Red and White weren’t really contenders to even play in Euro 1992, as they had failed to qualify for the competition. Their participation only happened after war-torn Yugoslavia were disqualified and the rest as they say is history.

Portugal 0-1 Greece - 2004 Euro final

Being the host nation, Portugal were the favourites when they made it to the final of Euro 2004. Greece, on the other hand, were the underdogs as it was only their third appearance in a major tournament.

Greece’s way to the final included several upset wins, but nothing compares to their heroics in the final. They had beaten reigning champions France in the quarter-final, and got the better of Czech Republic in the semi-final.

Led by Luis Figo, Portugal had a superior team on paper, but it just wasn’t meant to be for them. The Portuguese attempted 16 shots on goal but only five of them were on target. Greece, on the other hand, scored with their only attempt on target.

The winning goal came a mere three minutes before the hour mark when Greece forward Angelos Charisteas rose highest to score the only goal of the match. The unthinkable then happened as the home crowd were silenced and the Greeks emerged triumphant.

England 1-2 Iceland - round of 16 Euro 2016

Iceland’s 2-1 win over England in the round of 16 of Euro 2016 has gone down as one of the most humiliating defeats for the Three Lions. Their then manager Roy Hodgson resigned minutes after the game as emotions poured in from both camps.

This victory for the Nordic minnows was an example of their sheer determination as they had to first overcome a Wayne Rooney goal before scoring the winner. Furthermore, the fact that Iceland were playing in their first major international tournament made that win all the more spectacular.

The first goal of the match came as early as the fourth minute when Wayne Rooney converted from the spot. A mere two minutes later, Iceland got right into the game through Ragnar Sigurdsson before Kolbeinn Sigthorsson capitalized on Joe Hart’s error to score the winner.

"They thought this would be a walk in the park," said goal-scorer Sigurdsson after the game.

Denmark national football team midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed on the field in the 43rd minute during his side’s UEFA Euro 2020 Group B match opening match against Finland at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The 29-year-old Eriksen was immediately given cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), an emergency lifesaving procedure performed during a heart attack, on the pitch as he collapsed while running near the left touchline after a Denmark throw-in.

CPR involves compressing the chest, which helps supply oxygen to the brain and other vital organs until normal heart activity is restored.

The teammates of Christian Eriksen gathered around him as Denmark captain Simon Kjaer appeared to stick his fingers in the midfielder's mouth to clear his airway or check Eriksen hadn't swallowed his tongue.

Simon Kjaer then ensured that the Danish players formed a ring to block the view for the photographers to take pictures and videos of Christian Eriksen when doctors and paramedics were trying to resuscitate him.

Simon Kjaer was also seen comforting Christian Eriksen's distressed wife Sabrina Kvist, who was seen crying at the edge of the field.

Christian Eriksen, an Inter Milan player, was stretchered off the field and later admitted to a hospital and stabilised. He is currently stable and has sent his greetings to his teammates.

The match between Denmark and Finland, which was initially suspended, resumed after one hour and 45 minutes. The Finns went on to secure a 1-0 win with a header from striker Joel Pohjanpalo.

Meanwhile, Christian Eriksen’s former cardiologist Dr Sanjay Sharma has said that the midfielder had no history of heart issues during his time at Tottenham Hotspur.

“I thought, 'Oh my God? Is there something there that we didn't see?' But I have looked at all the test results and everything looked perfect," Sharma was quoted as saying to The Mail.

"From the day we signed him, it was my job to screen him and we tested him every year. So certainly his tests up to 2019 were completely normal, with no obvious underlying cardiac fault. I can vouch for that because I did the tests," he added.

Ahead of Denmark's Group B encounter against Belgium, the Danish FA announced that Eriksen will have an ICD - implantable cardioverter defibrillator - inserted near his heart. Team doctor Morten Boesen revealed that the Inter Milan midfielder accepted the treatment, which has been recommended by specialists nationally and internationally.

The Republic of Ireland missed out on automatic qualification for Euro 2020 as a 1-1 draw with Denmark in Dublin on Monday secured the visitors' place at next summer's showpiece.

Switzerland also booked their place at Euro 2020 with a 6-1 win over Gibraltar to claim top spot in Group A.

Ireland still have a chance to play in the Euros on home soil with Dublin one of 12 host cities but need to come through two playoff matches in March.

Martin Braithwaite's strike for Denmark 17 minutes from time left Mick McCarthy's men needing to score twice. Matt Doherty's first international goal was too little, too late.

"Overall I'm very pleased with the performance and very proud of the players, particularly after conceding, to push them right to the limit," McCarthy told Sky Sports.

"Play like that in the playoffs and we can beat anybody."

The hosts were seeking revenge for the 5-1 victory in Dublin two years ago that sent Denmark to the 2018 World Cup.

However, in six meetings between the sides over the past two years Ireland have scored just three goals. A lack of cutting edge cost them again.

Ireland scored just seven goals in eight qualifiers in total, including two meetings with Gibraltar.

"You need to score goals to win games and we haven't scored enough," said Doherty. "It was a tough group, we went all the way and we have to make sure we are right in March."

The hosts looked the most likely to make the breakthrough in a first half of few clear chances.

Conor Hourihane had the best of them but fired too close to Kasper Schmeichel as he insisted on taking the shot with his stronger left foot leaving only a narrow angle.

In contrast to recent meetings between the sides, Denmark were happy to sit back and force Ireland to break them down, knowing a point would be enough for qualification.

"We were terrible," admitted Danish captain Schmeichel. "We didn't hit anything that we tried to today. We had to rely on our grit and or determination."

However, the Danes produced the one moment of quality they needed when Braithwaite met Henrik Dalsgaard's cross on the stretch.

"We had to ride our luck at times but you need that when you are fighting for qualification," added Schmeichel.

Denmark can look forward to games at home in Copenhagen at the Euros.

"It means the world because we are a very small nation so the chance of playing games at home in a major tournament is amazing, it's unique," said Schmeichel.

Switzerland made sure they beat the Danes to top spot in the group by hitting Gibraltar for six.

Granit Xhaka was among the goalscorers as he put his woes at club level to one side after being stripped of the Arsenal captaincy due to his public run-in with the club's fans.
